Just read that the other club are giving up this site at the end of the year.  Anybody else heard that.

Hadn't seen that anywhere Jill. Isn't that site actually owned by the local council. Prime location for luxury housing/lodges maybe?  frown

Not sure who currently owns it but this came from somebody actually staying on site this weekend.

I did read this on facebook last week.

However it is still possible to book a pitch for mid January so who knows the truth!

I did read in the last 12 months that C&CC were looking to extend the site.

I read they had planning permission to expand into the woods adjacent to the ferry road. I was surprised at the proposed loss of woodland in this area but thought it was going ahead? It's a council leasehold site.

PS perhaps it's closing at some point so that work can commence?

I had heard the same. If I recall correctly, from the time the CMC lost the site, the running of the site was put out to tender by the local authority on a relatively short lease. I am sure many of us were surprised that the C&CC were able to secure the lease ahead on the CMC. Unless of course the CMC knew something that made them unwilling to pay the price. We all know that the CMC will only take on leases if they are long enough to make it worthwhile for them to invest in the facilities. On the other hand the C&CC don't seem too bothered and this unfortunately shows in a fair number of their sites!

Seems strange to have paid for planning permission and got it?! Twenty plus new pitches if I remember correctly.

It’s mentioned in their latest magazine (November 2019) saying it’s leaving their network and is open until 2nd January 2020.

When the CCC have been "touting "for members with national tv adverts, and having been trying to attract us "seniors"with ever more discounts at peak times ,whether they are not as financialy secure as they try to make out, and maybe by pulling out of Braithwaite it could save a lot of money if the local council are as most trying to "squeeze"local business  for as much as possible and so the CCC have decided the the planned "refurb"and extension is not viable now, as the CC did when their lease was up,there is a limit to all costs that can be absorbed or past on the the end user in this case the membership

Probably on a 'need to know' basis. laughing

It will be a sad loss. I visited the site the year before the CC lost it ..... I don't believe that they lost it deliberately but suspect that they wanted a deal that allowed them leeway to improve the facilities block.

When we joined C&CC 2 years ago the site at Braithwaite was a major part of the decision to join even though we return to sites infrequently.

Thanks for the info, haven't got my magazine yet. Have used the site a lot under both the clubs. The C&CC have acquired more sites in the Lakes, probably with a lot more pitching possibilities etc. I expect the lease at Braithwaite is at a premium. Sorry to see it go.

A conversation that I had this week has shed some light on why it seems that this club is hold Inc back on some sites refurbs, neither club own that many sites the majority are on long leases which enables modernisation /upgrades over the lease period,  numerous site leases are now coming up for renewal, but if the lease is with local authorities  and with the finacial problems they are under, they are looking to find ways of boosting their finances and it seems they are looking at camping/caravan site leases as a possible good income when up for renewal, so an "interesting" period could be just round the corner for the prices of renewing leasessurprised

As Moulesy suggests there is prime building land in some of these places. smile

Don't forget the C&CC acquired Scotgate Caravan site at Braithwaite village just outside Keswick this year, ideally situated for the northern lakes but not, maybe, in such a prime position as far as land value is concerned. So it could be a way of recouping some of that expenditure and, I'd guess, having a not inconsiderable amount left over!

I couldn't remember whether they'd bought one or two sites in the lakes, just checked and the other is in Sherwood Forest.

The sites most likely to be a success are all weather sites within walking distance of small towns /cities and tourist spots...Like Braithwaite Fold. Of course if the Council gets too greedy no-one can make it pay.

Same with Baltic Wharf. Which i think is still plodding on and always fully booked ?

A report in a local paper about an extension of the site here https://www.thewestmorlandgazette.co.uk/news/17477436.lake-district-trees-felled-in-park-plan/ Planning for such things in a National Park is quite difficult I imagine.

Maybe South Lakeland District Council have decided that at £18 a day car park fee an extension to the car park might be more profitable and that more parking is needed.

Hmm. A car park in a prime location near to town, with hard standing, electrical hook ups and tank filling and emptying facilities - now to whom might the local authority rent out spaces overnight?

Parking charges in many areas seem to me to be getting far too high, even many small places in Yorkshire, where we were recently, are charging, and then the councils wonder why the high street is dying.

Where we live, a reasonably sized out of town area, there were no parking charges in the villages until a few years back, then the council decided to introduce charges in their car parks.  They started with giving the first hour free, which was plenty for going to the local shops, post office, bank, picking up a prescription, and meant that as the local shop owners were no longer parking there and taking up the majority of the spaces, you could actually get parked in the spaces nearest the shops.

After a couple of years they got greedy and decided to abolish the first free hour, since then we, and many others have stopped using the local post office and banks, of which there were 3 in one village and 4 in the other Now, one bank has closed down and four are only open 3 days a week and offer reduced counter service.  The shopping areas are quite quiet now, and some of the local shops have shut.  Even the library has gone downhill.

There are still nearby supermarket car parks....Tesco, M&S, Waitrose.....within walking distance and these are now busier than ever. They allow 2 or 3 hours parking, plenty of time for shopping, dental appointments, banking etc, but not so  good if you have difficulty walking longer distances.

It is similar in Glasgow with parking charges, we rarely go into the city these days, but when we do we use the bus, so we cannot do as much shopping as when we used to drive in.

Yes, Baltic Wharf has been rumoured to having being closed for over the past 5 years. Talk of building a school, not wise between two rivers, then upmarket flats. Soooo pleased it s still open.

Times are a changing. Land owners are looking for more profitable uses, cash strapped Councils becoming ever more desperate to find whatever fees they can, core touring fraternity is ageing and more reliant upon being closer to urban areas, even small businesses like farms are looking for better returns on diverse projects.

We might be rejoining CCC after a substantial break. Likely to use them for our MH renewal, and small membership discount on insurance will cover most of taking out paperless membership, so we might as well go for it.

There has been many changes already. When the financial crash happened 10 years or so ago there were many development projects dropped around the UK. When Brexit is finally sorted (one way or another) I expect to see more investment in UK.

Before I retired I was involved in design checking from the highways point of view for Section 5 development agreements. Around the time that I retired about end of 2007 many developments fell though - not just in Cheshire, as presumably investors pulled out

Agree, it’s been going on for a while. Lots of mothballed building projects around our area, large and small. There are a lot of heartbreaking stories about small businesses folding during last couple of years in press at the moment. It’s going to get a lot worse, before it gets any better. We can’t get one of drugs OH needs at moment, luckily not a life threatening one. Same with pet drugs as well. Our lovely German vet (married to a Scot) has worked tirelessly on our behalf these last few months, we let her know how much she is appreciated.
