Jockey wheel tyre

During our first trip in our Elddis Riva Gold 554 we decided to turn it around using the motormover so we faced a lake :) Having seen how easily it turned on tarmac we were not impressed when on "compacted" large stone about 40-50mm diameter. The flat type of wheel struggled to turn direction and also at times go over the stone. It also appears to be quite thin with the risk of breaking easily. No doubt it has been designed to keep the weight down!

Has any a preference to the type of wheel they have fitted? I would have thought the a more rounded profile would be better.

Did you have the jockey wheel wound up far enough to clear the slot at the bottom of the jockey wheel tube? 🤔

Not that I've ever done it ... 🙄

Funny you should say that, I did just that earlier this year embarassed OH was not impressed as we were on a sandy pitch, the wheel dug in and it bent it surprised at that time we had a pneumatic tyre. We don't anymore.

yes wound up, but a good point! The first time we have used a motor mover apart from a test on flat tarmac. perhaps we are expecting too much? Next time i am going to put a flat matt under the jockey wheel to see if it improves it shouyld there be a similar probelm

Also when moving off a gravel pitch using the mover take the caravan forward a bit and brush off any gravel stuck on the tyres, not a good idea to have gravel stuck between the rollers and the tyres

We do that 0001 but it is important that the one with the controller maintains communication if OH is working on the opposite tyre to ensure they have stood clear after brushing the stones of the tyre

Particularly important with the auto engage sort, small stones can easily jam the engage / disengage mechanism. The one time we forgot to clean the wheels off gravel did just that. Fortunately managed to extract it.

You say it was the first trip with your Elddis.   Try winding the Jockey wheel as high as it will go, and check that there is plenty of grease on the inner shaft,   the more the better.

Before moving the caravan with the mover on any surface with the cornersteadies  down I first raise and aligne the jockey wheel in the direction I wish to go

Great point. Had not thought of that. Maybe we were better off on large stone!

Not always so, footloose, it depends how compacted the stones are. With larger stones if loosely packed the wheel could just dig into them and you have a different problem!!
