Best route, Forfar Lochside to Maragowan

Travelling up to Forfar Lochside club site later this week for 5 nights, then planning to spend a few nights at Maragowan club site in Killin.  Google suggests two routes:

(1) 71 miles (the scenic route?) via Glamis and Coupar Angus (A94); then A923 and A984 (Old Military Road) to Dunkeld; then A822/A826 to Aberfeldy and A827 to Killin.

(2) 80 miles (the straightforward route) on the A90 via Dundee to Perth, then A85 and eventually A827 to Killin.

Head says route (2) but heart is considering route (1).  Anyone done this route, is it suitable for towing?

    Hi we live in Perth and would advise that route 2 would be the better choice. The Old Military road is narrow, windy and not great for towing on.

    The road from Perth > Crieff > Comrie will give you a nice scenic route, can be a bit tight going through Crieff and Comrie if you have a large rig as cars sometimes park along the road in awkward places surprised

    There should be plenty of water in the falls at Aberfeldy and Killin. Enjoy.

    TG,  when I suggested somebody could use the A827, DK growled at me embarassed Well we were coming from the Pitlochry end !!  ( but I have to agree with you despite everything laughing )

    I suppose every road we use 'oop north depends on the width / length of our outfit  and our confidence  wink  !!

    True, we've had so much rain though in the last week that some of the 'back roads' will be awash, the verges will also be very bad as its 'Tatty' picking time up here and the farmers do be out with their twackers laughing

    The drive along Lochearn can be interesting wink

    Apologies MikeBos the route we would suggest it from Perth to Crieff and Comrie. NOT from Perth up the A9 to Aberfeldy.

    There are major roadwork just north of Perth which are causing all sorts of problems just now.

    When we go from here we us the Crieff > Comrie route perfectly doable even with a large outfit.

    Thanks TG, I'll use the 'straightforward' A85 route through Crieff and Comrie.

    We did route (1) in our motorhome a few weeks back from Killin to Forfar and it is quite challenging and slow. We arrived at Killin from Edinburgh so did cover much of route (2) which is better by quite a margin. Had I realised what route (1) was like in hindsight I think I would have travelled to Forfar the longer way round.
