New to autumn and winter touring

“…just my thoughts.“
Mine too, Corners. Hannah started a potentially useful thread which quickly went the way of so many others😕

yes thanks, I thought it was just me that thought suggesting not going or heading over there was a 'real' suggestion?

i mentioned this age old adage to my wife yesterday as we stolled 'pleasantly' along a lovely cornish beach in horizontal rain....
wrong! there is definitely a thing as unpredictable (crap) weather in the UK.

of course its a real suggestion....
one option re winter touring is most certainly to pitch up here and make adjustments to your touring processes....new jackets for outside kit. pipe lagging by the metre, van full of waterproof coats, willies(sic) and umbrellas that wouldn't last two minutes in the weather weve had here.
you can sit inside your van for hours on end watching the rain and you can traipse to the water/waste point and shower block in your North Face gear...
there is another option, that involves none of this yet allows folk to spend time away in their van, enjoying stunning beaches, countyside, lakes, rivers, mountains etc just as you can in the uk....
but without all the precautions/workarounds to prevent the van freezing up and the extra wardrobe.
and 16 deg will be a shade temperature measurement and the equivalent outside daytime temperature would be nearer 20-22 in that case.
despite being a 'non-specific thread', I'm sure (knowing CC) this thread was about lagging barrels and pipes in the uk....
however, it doesnt have to be like that and assuming every new caravanner (this section) would rather do that and sit inside with a bowl of soup rather than sit in the sun with a nice Rioja is a bit blinkered.
like DD above and many others, we do a bit of both and i dont see anything wrong with raising the awareness of new vanners that there is another way which can be done in addition to their uk touring or instead of.

I saw it more of a Freudian slip

A couple from Poole Harbour. The first is the road into the site. Other are the Harbour in Poole

what? who said that? Do you think that is all people do in winter touring, of course you do the same that you do in summer, use your caravan as a base to visit the surrounding area. By all means have soup in the evenings though
And again if even people do want to do that why is that wrong in your books? It must be as you've mention it specially? Why should they even have to justify their choice? Is it a case of your way or none?
PS check the weather I've always found it spot on, in far worse conditions than you described. And get some decent winter gear will help too.

I haven't got any photos of our stay at Rowntree Park in York when the snow came in and stopped play. York was wonderfully empty of tourists and we made repeat visits to some of the usually crowded attractions! Those coming to the site cancelled bookings and those who were there stayed on a bit longer. The less well insulated vans had the most difficulties and in the end we had frozen pipes but with a container of water on board we managed. One tap remained open on site and the facility blocks were open (a bit chilly underfoot!)
I'm thinking of people who don't mind the cold and love the snow, those who go off to do winter sports abroad and even here in Scotland when the ski slopes are busy and the mountains attract winter adventurers.
Read up about contingency plans for low temperatures and you will survive and no doubt enjoy it.

That’ll be the ‘unpredictable’ weather as per the forecast I suppose😀
Horizontal rain? Come on, BB, that was nothing like horizontal. It was a bit windy and we had some rain but you do exaggerate 😂😂😂
Enjoy today’s sun.

And Back To Hannah's request for top tips / indispensible items :--
Don't forget the Spanner for the gas bottles !! In fact I carry TWO ( 2 ) -- one to use and one to lose !!
Truly there's nothing worse than having to hunt for one at Freeze o'clock in the early morning

‘Ex Hurricane Lorenzo lashes Cornwall’, mmmm, lets go take a walk it’ll be sunny & warm like Malaga🤣🤣🤣

Nope, it was definitely me. . .you can see my name above the words, even the date & time. Happy to help👍🏻😊

yes, you're right Rocky, we got lashed...and 'twer horizontal....water does that when being propelled by 40+ mph winds...
we took a walk on the dunes and then back via the beach, as we'd finished our soup
obviously TW lives in the sheltered part of cornwall.
just driven back home, far quieter here and by the time we got to exeter.
however, Malaga, it aint....although i tend to use that area for golf rather than touring, plenty of nice places away from the 'resorts'.
as MM so astutely pointed out, i suggested touring away was not just an alternative but an additional way to tour in winter.

Not particularly sheltered, BB, but clearly an element of careful selection is wise. I’m staggered that anyone would choose to walk on a beach in the conditions you describe😂😂😂

it was sunny when we were in the dunes....im staggered that anyone from Cornwall would not realise how changable the weather is there
