Booking pitches

We keep records too, not only where we have been but my wife's diary also records in one line summaries what we did, the weather and what we had for dinner
Fliss keeps a diary of where we visit so that she can identify photos she has taken

I can't recall when and where I have moved pitch on the same site as no records are kept, but It has been an occasional occurance. Always to get a better view rather than a change of pitch surface.
Should only unsuitable views be available on arrival it takes but a moment for the Warden to tell me which of the preferable pitches are due to be vacated the next morning, and then either keep a lookout for someone moving, or simply speak with the other caravanner who is leaving.

I must admit we have changed pitches just once and that was before Black Knowl had the roads surfaced when the only road round the site was "gravel" and if pitched near and down wind it could be very dusty,so we moved to another pitch further away

"Personally I would have no objection to there being a small price separation between hardstandings and grass pitches similar to what the C&CC do, almost surprised the Club have not thought about that for themselves"
i agree with David, there shpuld be a difference in price, but in order to be able to make this change, HS and Grass need to be different entities in the system, currently they are not...they are just 'pitches'..
but doing so would enable true pitch type booking along with appropriate charging.
however, following their abortive trial, i dont see the club moving that way, despite CCC and most commercials being able to manage this simple difference without any problems.
IMHO, better choice and reflective pricing for customers, and that should count for something, shouldn't it?

If the Club added £1 for a hardstanding and took £1 off a grass pitch, on sites where there was a mix of both, I am sure they would be quids in?

As to when grass pitches are opened or closed is a bit of a moveable feast they no doubt would set the prices as if they were open as long as the site was open. They manage perfectly well in the C&CC with charging different prices. The £1 wouldn't be an add on price like a serviced pitch there would be a standard fee for hardstandings and another for grass.

Indeed and I suspect many would do the same leading to a loss of income and therefore higher prices?

👍🏻, always with an eye on the bigger picture MrC👏🏻👏🏻😎

Just a thought – Perhaps, if the club did start to allow HS bookings, then charge a little extra per night & make that amount a non-refundable ‘deposit’ for cancellations.

I can book a hard standing pitch for this weekend at dozens of campsites - no problem at all. The warden won't have the right colour uniform but hey I can live with that.

This discussion will become irrelevant quite soon when the last of the grass pitches are made hard standing.

But then on the other hand if? that ever happened it would be even more difficult to get on sites as by putting in more Hardstands means the loss of pitches and will lead to more price increases to cover the loss of income
Three grass pitches , some times more ,equals two hardstands

Another thought - What may be helpful to those who use their LV all year would be for members to be informed somewhere official when the grass pitches go out of use on each site therefore they know they will be booking a HS . Perhaps on each site’s booking page &/or in the book.

brilliant go there, win, win as they say so what is the problem?
Actually you're not a fan of club sites and I suspect you wouldn't come to them even if you could book a HS?

As in a previos post when the trial was ended, the confusion was when members arrived on site and had not booked a hardstand, they were quite "upset?" to note empty hardstands that had been booked but ,could be full in a week when the "upset" member was on site for over that period, but could not understand why

I don't follow that at all. Unless hard standing pitches are wider than grass. Which could be the case as The Club applies forward thinking to larger caravans and awnings?
However, grass pitches have traditionally been "variable" as the peg could be moved to allow parts of the site to recover from bad use (by members of course!). So this would actually require an amount of space to be available as spare, so it could be seen that grass pitches, en masse, take up more space than hard.
Now, I noticed at Conniston that most of the pitching areas in the wood were constructed totally of hard standing without the strips of grass as no-mans'-land in between. Nature was well on the way to reclaiming its own as much of the hard surface was covered in grass and other low growing plants. A very nice solution that accomodates most of the demands of both sides.

I suspect with the amount of rain we have had lately many pitches would have been closed already earlier than planned. The opening and closure is generally weather related, an nice warm dry spring they open early a wet autumn they close early etc.

This suggestion would be useful if there was a definite date when grass pitches would no longer be used but as I suggested earlier that date is probably a moveable feast. I am all for more information being available, one of the advantages of the internet! If the Club said that no grass pitches would be in use from, say, 1st November to 1st March (most all grass pitch sites are closed during is period anyway) that would make it easier. The trouble is it is likely that some grass pitches will be out of action between 2nd March to the 31st October depending on prevailing weather conditions so difficult to be precise. Surely by far the most straightforward solution would be to be able to book the type of pitch you wanted?
Not sure wardens would welcome loads of phone calls asking if grass pitches were out of action? From my limited experience of phoning Club sites I reckon its 50/50 that I would get an answer phone!!!
