Towcar of the year all stars - like your favourite
This week we're celebrating the 37th Towcar of the Year Awards. We've seen amazing classic cars over the years so we've created #TCOYallstars to find the ultimate 1980's and 1990's champions. Over the next few days I will be posting 2 cars. Like the post with your favourite and/or comment with your memories of the cars.

I had one of these and towed all over Europe with it. If I recall correctly it had the SRi engine in it. I don't recall being overwhelmed by it but it was a competent towcar.

Another Tow Car of the Year I have owned. In many ways a brilliant tow car. That suspension was phenomenal. If there was a downside it was the electrics, I towed down to the South of France with the airbag light on! Also didn't help that it went into limp mode on the Brenner Pass!!!

We had the 3.0 Senator excellent car and very very quick but it did like visiting the petrol station. Also had a Peugeot 406 excellent all round car and a good tow car we towed down to Devon with it and various other places no real issues although it was a bit on the light side so close to its tow limit with the van on the back.

Unfortunately tow car of the year (TOY) is merely a snap decision/choice made by a dozen testers with tow cars that have been lent by manufacturers.
If a car maker declined to enter the arena, does that make his vehicle valueless?
I once purchased a TOY feeling safe in that it had been tested by the club. Oh dear! What a mistake.
After 40K miles the engine management system gave up the ghost, the engine misfired terribly, Then after green flag said 'it is safe to continue with your journey' the car only towed another 2 miles before completely breaking down and was subsequently scrapped. Mind you I did get to the holiday site and back home with a tow-car lent by Green Flag.
The moral being - ignore the pundits and go with what you know.

interestingly all these cars have a top speed of between 100 - 150 mph, and i will bet that the batch they role out this year will be of a similar ilk, but why?, the max legal speed limit in the UK is 70 mph, if we were to limit the engine size of cars/mpvs/suvs etc to say 2.5 cc with a top speed of 100 mph, i wonder how much pollution being pumped into the atmosphere this would save, no more 3.5 cc gas guzzlers, the way engines have developped today you dont need a 3.5cc gas guzzler to tow a caravan.
And interestingly what about all those bells and whilstles that are rolled out in vehicles today. When we lived in Scotland living off road we always had LR Discoveries which had enough bells and whistles requiring enough power to light up Blackpool tower, did we ever use them, very seldom except in the deepest of snow, not something we get regularly now. I notice on this post that people admit to having flashy gear changes on various cars that they have never used, stick it in auto and let the gear box take the strain, seems to be the trend. Will watch the outcome with bated breath, but will not be buying a new tow car whatever the outcome.

Not me DK. 😁Towing our caravan was incidental to the other things we towed, and the conditions we faced. Hence we needed the 4x4 capability and that extra lever dictating how the gears were selected. Low range trickle in thick mud, towing over two tonnes of plunging beastie required a bit more oomph! We tried it with a Rover 3.5 SD1, it towed, but the super steep and long inclines around us took its toll. As did the mud.....
Hence I will wait to see if a LR won an accolade...... and then vote.

To what extent is TOY applicable to everyday use by club members?
Mine was useless after 4 yrs. and 40K miles.
Do club members have a TOY that exceeded their expectations or indeed, was absolutely useless?
Wish I had bought a Landy instead.

When it is acknowledged that TOY vehicles are it seems, only the ones that some companies are wiling to put forward, in all the years and vehicles we have used to tug our numerous caravans around only one was a dog a vauxall carlton that seemed to eat camshafts, but none have been toy that i can remember
