Canon Downs or Stowe Gardens
We are travelling from near Leicester to Oxford next Tuesday and want to visit a NationalTrust property on route, the above two have tweaked our interest. The question is which one or both in the day? We could possibly do one when we leave Oxford on Friday

Hi Hugh. Do you mean Canons Ashby, the EH Site?
SorryI can’t help on either. However, we use a route that takes in Morton in Marsh and close to both Hidcote Gardens and Snowshill Manor. Both NT, we think they are two of the very best NT properties. We use M69, A46 to Warwick M40 roundabout and then A429.😁

Ah! I thought Carnon Downs would be a bit off your route, Hugh, but TDA has solved the mystery. Enjoy your trip.

Plenty of walks at Canons Ashby,(it is a N/T property, tda), but if it was me I'd visit Stowe, especially if you've not been before. If you are a member of HHA you can also get in to see the school, where Richard Branson was taught, I think.

Nice spot to stop at Stowe with a MH but mind out for the sleeping policemen. Possibly a 'wild camp' overnight for a peaceful stop in the countryside?

cyberyacht - Ourselves being National Trust members feel that if you are suggesting using National Trust land/area in this way then we disagree & also feel this public forum is definitely not the place to post such a suggestion.

As we don't live far from either Canons Ashby or Stowe we visit both regularly. Both have large car parks suitable for motorhomes. Canons Ashby House is interesting, the church too, and the gardens are beautiful, the parkland is smaller but there are further walks in the area. Don't know if you have a dog, but they are not permitted in the gardens.
Stowe is much larger and is totally dog friendly, lovely walks around the lakes and wider parkland, taking in all the monuments and follies.I would allow more time at Stowe, although it would be possible to do both in a day.
PS They both have good tea rooms. 😉
Charlecote Park is also worth a visit if you can fit it in. Hope you enjoy whichever you decide to visit.

Stowe it is, we are booked on a cl at Abingdon Tuesday night so will make a full day of Stowe. We may visit Canons Ashby before we leave the area
H&T yes we have a dog Bella a 3 1/2 year old border collie ( looks like you have too)who loves exercise and we love the tea rooms as well as the history
Thank you for your advice, the usual suspects to the fore
Hugh

I think you have made a good choice, Hugh. Stowe is one of our favourite places, and great for dogs (yes we do have a Border Collie too ☺) as you can walk for miles. There are maps of the gardens, but ask the staff/volunteers for a map of the wider park walks.
Might even visit Stowe ourselves this weekend.😉

We did visit Stowe on Tuesday arriving at 9.30. Plenty of parking for motorhome
Wall to wall sunshine too, what a fabulous place, Bella loved it too. Late lunch at tea room just topped a great visit. Thank you all for the advice. We loved Stowe

Glad that you had a good day at Stowe. It will be Cannons Ashby on the way home then is it, Hugh?

What's the name of the CL you're on? We're heading down south on our next trip, and have not yet finalised where we'll head en route to Kent.

Thanks Hugh. One to consider for our return from the S.East.
