Never been on the M25, except when a coach driver was in charge. My idea of touring hell😱, hence why we never think of touring in SE, other than around Coast. Train every time anywhere inside M25.......

As has been said further up the thread, it is a cheapskate solution. How much improved flow do they get when the police close the motorway because of a fatal due to the absence of a hard shoulder?

Use the Road side phone then wait ( if you dare ) until the Emergency service arrives and they will arrange for your removal at your cost. They don't want anything cluttering up their precious Motorways, the one difficulty is getting a fair distance from the 'live' lanes.
I dont mean to imply that the e-services are uncaring, or unfeeling, money grabbing 'erberts -- far from it but they just prefer to be shifting breakdowns rather than damaged human bodies

I would also add that you will find yourself suddenly religious, and the van will not be your first concern, it will be getting human bodies to a safe refuge point.😱

Get every living creature away from the moving traffic. Get ready to pay what is demanded. ‘Breakdown services are a complete waste of money & are way too expensive’. . .Until you desperately need them, then they are worth every penny & then some👍🏻

I was under the impression that the hard shoulder was not only a refuge, but a means of getting emergency vehicles to a scene of an accident unimpeded.
It now seems that idea has gone into the fast lane. !
Obviously none with the idea of smart motorways designers have thought about the "Golden Hour" for accident and injury intervention.
Twos and Blues stuck behind several miles of blocked motorway seems a good method for increasing the fatalities at an accident scene.
