Smell of Gas

I have only been caravanning for about a year now and towards the end of the season last year I could smell gas towards the front of the van (Swift Major TD6). It was serviced a few weeks ago and they said it had a gas leak that they said they had fixed.

When using the van over the last few days I could smell gas for a few minutes in the evening, usually after the heating turning off. I have been hooked up to mains electric and so only have been using the gas for the oven.

Yesterday I didn’t use the oven and turned the valve on the gas bottle to closed but in the evening I could again smell gas for a few minutes in the front of the van. I don’t understand where any gas could be coming from because I was not using anything that was connected to gas and the valve was closed on the gas bottle.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

get a paint brush and some washing up liquid mixed with water and paint this mixture all over the gas bottle where the valve is attached  and where the tap and tail connects. any bubbles tells you there's a leak. also Check the regulator and the pipe and fittings if there is a gas bbq connecting point.

I once had an exchange gas bottle that gave off the same smell despite its valve being closed.

Using the technique lornalou1 suggests I found a very trace leak where the brass valve was screwed into the steel bottle. If yours is a Calor with their use of a neck collar doing this check might not be practical.

If you suspect yours is leaking there take it back to a retailer. Given this has safety ramifications, I am sure any responsible retailer will readily exchange a bottle that could be faulty.

Hopefully the poster has found the issue, I had the same problem a few weeks ago and exactly as already suggested found the leak with some soapy water. The "new" gas bottle I had obtained from a club site had a faulty thread and would not seal. Unfortunately the Club wardens were unwilling to take the bottle back because they don't have the facility ? I will no longer buy bottles from the club. A Van service company near home swapped it for me.
