8' wide caravans on club pitches

"RnR, I was going to come on here and ask for my post to be Deleted User but I've seen your reply and obviously you are happy with your choice. Glad to hear it. Apologies if any offence given as none meant."
WN - no need to feel you have to delete your post - I was not offended in the slightest. You were right to point out that wider vans do impose certain restrictions - such as it not being sensible to visit remote CLs!! We can live with that.
Considering I started my camping experience in a 2-man Vango Force 10 tent, I have seen all aspects of our hobby. I just know - with the onset of creaky bones - which suits us best now!!

Some Club Sites do have tight spacing, agree WN. As you say BD springs to mind, and Old Hartley would be interesting! But the Club knows what’s arriving, declaring width will no doubt be added to length, and then it will either be yea or nay in terms of usage, with the Wardens allocating a pitch if they have something suitable. That’s a compromise, accepting that your pitch choice might be limited.

as I said, unless invited.....
we do happen to generally speak to neighbours, and are happy to have a drink too, but i wouldn't dream of walking through someone else's pitch, let alone set my chairs up there, but some think nothing of it.
yes, fire gaps are most important, and I would agree with you taking exception.
proprietorial, possibly, but overspill is one of the pleasures of a large outfit and loads of kit....and I guess it's good to have neighbours who are happy to help with the accommodation of such.

I think that most people who buy an 8' wide caravan will understand that there will be times that your pitch choice, even club site choice, may limit where you can pitch. I'm not so sure the club will end up altering any pitches, just making sure that 8' vans are allocated if necessary.
We've only ever had 1 case of sizeist discrimantion. Many years ago we were "allocated" a pitch at the Morris site in Shrewsbury for our small 2 berth Swift. The pitch was obviously a runt pitch and we were told in no uncertain terms that we couldn't pitch anywhere else. Other occupants could choose their pitch. We've never been back or used other Morris sites since.

Our problem is being small! If we want to use YRP, we know the Club will want to stuff us into one of the tight little cubby holes that masquerade as a pitch in an area we don’t fancy. We deal with it.........😉
Edit: we crossed posts WN😁 Yes, there are issues at the other end of the scale as well.

Do you know, thinking back over all the years we've been camping and caravanning I can't think of a single occasion when neighbours have "upset" us by putting chairs or tables on "our pitch". (Plenty of walking across "our pirch" which does annoy me when it happens.)
We're in danger of creating a problem that simply doesn't exist as far as I'm concerned!

I think the future trend will be towards much smaller caravans, not larger! Then, we may even see the demise of the caravan as we know it today altogether. If so, larger vans may start losing residual value at rather an alarming rate.

The UK manufacturers it seems are heading that way as with the latest Bailey, and the end door little swift sport? c/vans will IMHO never not be manufactured, as they give so much versatility with a low /zero emissions go almost anywhere/any time support vehicle alongside on a pitch

I don’t think it is the size of the occupants JVB, it’s driven more I would say by folks wanting to make touring a bit easier. That why fixed beds, larger bathrooms, more sophisticated kitchens, drop down beds are quite routine now. The van/MH touring population has aged, design features have recognised this and adapted so that a lot of the hard work like putting beds down no longer exists for some. At the other end of the scale, innovation is recognising the need for lightweight, small outfits such as GoPods, T@bs, and micro campers. So creaking age, and youthful litheness are both covered.😁

WN, you’ve quoted my post, you seem to have confused me with another👍🏻

Although our twin axle is long, being 11 years old it is just the normal width, however the tow car is quite wide and it can sometimes be tricky pitching to the peg and keeping 2 of the wheels off the grass and still having space for water and waste containers.
With the awning, we have changed from a roll out Fiamma to a Sunncamp canopy with sides, we have no rigid framework that sits against the van so need to peg out front guy lines at a suitable angle/distance, which will sometimes mean the pegs being maybe 50cm out in the grass, otherwise the awning would fall down! The actual awning will still be within the hardstanding, and fire spacing is maintained.
This problem, which I do not really see as a problem, only happens on older sites, the newer hardstandings are plenty wide enough. Nobody with a shred of good manners should be walking close enough to our awning to trip over the guy lines!

I just wonder if these 'new' small awning out the back small caravans like the base camp etc. are the way forward. The guy ropes won't enter that no mans land mentioned and you never know, as they don't infringe on firebreaks, they should be allowed on those so called non awning pitches.

I agree with M, this is a non problem. I saw a few 8 foot caravans and apart from noticing the name spotting 6 extra inches is difficult.
They all fitted on the pitches quite well indeed.

I was very impressed, suffice to say Nursey has not been alerted👍🏻😊

probably not on the majority of sites, but consider this, you roll up to a site you have not visited before, pitches seem to be on the small size, there are some sites that are like this, but you have done your homework and there are a couple of pitches you would like so that you have adequate space for your awning, however, on touring round you see they have a reserved flag on them, when enquiring as to why, you are told that they are expecting a couple of large units which will only fit on those 2 pitches, do you roll over and accept that their needs may be greater than yours or do you object.
I bow to your superior knowledge of club sites, but if you think this is not a possibility then think again, i saw it happen at Rooksbury park, ok over 10 years ago, and i think the site has now had a revamp, could still happen ?

I accept it Rufs, happens all the time at Exeter. Like I accept not parking in disability and parent and child parking spaces at supermarkets, sometimes someone else’s needs are more than mine. It’s swings and roundabout........
😁

Rufs
For the past six years, until we changed earlier this year, we had a 7.5 metre long motorhome which was also 8 foot wide. Never had a problem on any of the sites we used both Club and commercial. In fact if there was an issue it was more likely to be with the length as we just about fitted on some CMC pitches length wise.

Yes, I'm sure it still happens, particularly on the older less formal sites many of us enjoy. Thing is someone has to manage the bookings. Of course, when the larger booked units tip up they find that they will have little if any choice as to which pitch they go on.
Don't think they are reserved more allocated according to the arrivals for that day.
Just 'roll over' and let those that know best organise things accordingly I say. Afterall, if I turned up to a booking to find that a selfish person had ignored the attempt at managing the situation and as a result there was no pitch to suit I would not be best pleased. But who would I be annoyed with I hear some say?

yes, wow they are impressive, had a chat with an onwer at Sandrigham, he said they were quite easy to drive?
I think length is more of a problem.
