     We use the caravan all year round. Each season has it's highlights, yes hot weather is great but I also love frosty cold weather, all you need is the right clothing.

    Having said that we had 28C on Sunday to 11C with gale force winds yesterday.

    For Mrs Ones birthday nearly 10 years ago I rented a French Manor House for 8 of us. We had an amazing time.  

    Next years special birthday for Mrs One have decided to rent a 70foot narrow boat for eight of us and 2 dogs.  We will take the van and site it on a cl somewhere close then at the end of the celebrations we will continue with our tour.  I just love the idea of mix and match.

    You do know you're going to have to spend the rest of the year making sure Mrs One doesn't look at CT? It's going to really spoil the surprise if she reads that! wink

    We did something very similar a few years ago, drove down from Scotland to Yorkshire, stayed on a CL we use often to see out youngest son and family. Left MH there while we went on a narrow boat  for a week with my sister and BIL, great week we had. They went on to Worksop to see family, we went back to CL to see our family then went on tour for a few weeks. 

    We tour all year round here and over there, we have a timeshare we go to for 3 weeks every year and we also like to take cruises.

    Hotels, not that keen but I do like self catering, so things like cottages and narrow boats would be our choice and will more than likely go down that route once we give up caravanning. 

    What many folk seem to forget when looking at these other types of holidays (like a cottage) is the cost of caravan/car or MH. These days they don't come cheap, then all the  other costs that are associated with owning them. So going to a cottage every couple of months would work out cheaper at the end of a year.

    When I was at work I had to travel a lot (Computer Engineer) so I got totally fed up with Airplanes and Hotels, but whilst flying in and out of the UK I used to marvel at the layout of Our Country and all the lovely places that I could drive to and visit. So I can now say that I have visited most of the UK, but still have Northern Ireland, Orkney and Shetland on my 'bucket list', my caravan, and now my motorhome (worth the expense!) give me the relative freedom to do that. Whilst I can still drive AND can afford to, i will carry on. Sorry BB but foreign climes no longer attract me at all. The World is too big for just one lifetime.

    That sounds lovely OP, a French Manor.

    We have considered a narrow boat, it’s hugely popular not far from us, Sowerby and Hebden Bridge Etc..... mind, I think we’d choose somewhere like Midlands or Kennet and Avon. Not dissimilar to caravan/MH in terms of space, living accommodation. Dog would love it 😁

    We have done combined holidays as well.......camping, pick up caravan, stop off for a week in a log cabin complex with family, then tour our way home back in caravan. We did Carradale like this. Club Site was closed but we had all log cabins, BILs out bunny hunting (😱), we had a boat as well. That was memorable for all the hunting, shooting, ferrets and fishing rods! Not our scene at all, but the shared company and meals were great fun.😁

    TDA the ferries crossing the North Sea are massive and more like cruise ships.  The Stena Britannica is nearly 63,000 tons and has stabilisers.  In 14+ trips we have never had an ‘uncomfortable trip’

    We only have about a 50 mile journey in the UK to Harwich so for us that’s a win.  Will be returning from this trip Cherbourg to Poole as we will drop into Hampshire to visit family
