Outback trekker gas BBQ

Hi all, I've just bought an outback trekker gas BBQ and we've used it connected to the caravan's external gas point but the BBQ didn't to get very hot (on max heat) to the point where we ended up finishing the cooking in the van. It was quite windy, but I've subsequently bought a separate regulator connected to a different gas bottle, and although it seemed slightly hotter, it still took 30 mins to cook thin chipolata sausages on max heat. Does anyone have one of these BBQs? Is this normal or is our BBQ defective?! The instructions say we should normally cook on low - medium heat.

Thanks!

    Hi

I know this an old post, but just seen it. I have had one of these for just short of two years and use connected to my caravan gas point. It works fine and gets hot and does cook quickly. Not sure if you have sorted yours out. Like most gas BBQs it can suffer if windy but a windbreak helps that but I haven't used one.

Some years ago, I had an Outback portable gas bbq - can't remember what model it was.  It was rubbish - for the very reasons you describe.  Ended up binning it and eventually bought a Weber Baby Q.  Yes - it was a lot more money, but it works perfectly - every time - and isn't affected by the wind at all.

The vast majority of those I see using BBQs on camp sites use Cadac.  Had one now 7 years and very pleased.

We have also had a Cadac, for about 10 years. In fact it is just about worn out. Very happy with it. However have recently bought a Cobb, which although they make gas versions, ours is charcoal. Very fast to get going, if you use their rather expensive cobbles (about £1.80 each) its 8 minutes from lighting to BBQing. Or you can use conventional briquettes and lighters which takes about 30 minutes. Only used it at home so far but very impressed. Especially for smoking fish. The residual charcoal is easy to deal with, as the basket holding it can be removed and it can be tipped into a metal container and doused.

I agree most people on site use Cadacs.   Can all these people be wrong?

Well imho, yes.  We have a Weber  baby Q, and the next size up if we are cooking more people.  Use if for every thing from a full English, to Salt crust Bass and a lot in between.

People seem to think the correct way to cook on a bbq is to get to about 1000C to get that burnt on the outside raw in the middle effect so typical of a British bbq.   Of course there are those traditionalists who want that distinctive flavour that only a charcoal bbq can give.   Yes the flavour of lighter fuel.   Do yourself a favour, if you are a charcoal fan invest in a chimney starter.  I think Aldi have the. at the moment for about £6.  Your taste buds will thank you.

might be a daft question but we are new to caravanning and have also just bought an outback trekker bbq. we have an external bbq point on the van (only picked up this week and is in storage so cant check details).

To convert the outback bbq to connect to the van I am assuming you need to do the following?..:

    - Remove current short gas lead off bbq including regulator (as gas is regulated now straight out the van?)

    - Fit 8mm long gas lead with push fit connector to end connecting to van https://www.caravanaccessoryshop.co.uk/product/gas-outlet-nozzle-post-2004/1298

Only query I have is gas regulator on bbq at the moment is 37 bar I assume the gas that comes out the van is same?

Also the current gas lead looks bigger than 8mm at the moment..

As you have already don't this a bit of help would be great if possible. I'm planning on using this next weekend!

    Thanks

    Matt

I've just bought the outback trekker and I have to say, I'm very disappointed with it. Only used it twice, once with the flat plate and once with the grill plate. Took an age to cook the food and equally long to clean it. Would not recommend this gas bbq, ever.

The outback trekker should be lit 10 minutes before use and the lid kept down. If you have a red one you will see it go from bright red to dark red. The barbecue now ready for use . Put the food on and keep the lid closed this will allow the smoke from the barbecue plate to flavour the meat. If it gets too hot or smokey lift the lid. Turn the food every 6 mins and all should be good. Hopefully this helps

Love the design and practicality but not impressed with CADAC build quality or after care. Piezo ignition on my Safari Chef 2 has never worked properly and continues to be useless, despite CADAC sending me a fix. I purchased their quick release coupling and that doesn’t work properly either, plus it snags the folding legs. Shame as it’s otherwise an excellent bit of kit and I love how well it packs away.
