I use one. Owned it since around 2015, comes with lifetime updates which I download via my laptop. A bit expensive and other people will suggest alternatives. What is it you want to know specifically?

Can you use it as normal sat nav when not towing ?

Can you use GPS to plot route rather than post code?

my husband has an older Garmin and I a Tomtom but both getting old now (like us ha ha) we thought a new all singing dancing one ready for our retirement. We are off to Italy next month.

The Garmin can be used as a normal satnav when not towing. You can specify and input the length, width, height and weight of your unit so that the satnav choses routes and observes speeds for that profile. You can easily switch between that profile and car profile. The vehicle icon on screen switches between car and Motorhome or caravan  so that you know what profile setting you are in.

Not quite sure about your second point. The device navigates using GPS. You can search for routes and destinations through postcode or manually complete the address, or use the stored campsite database (ASCI) or load your own Points of Interest from C&MH club or CCC club databases and select from a drop down menu.

The device already has a wide range of preloaded points of interest.

On the road it links to your phone to receive traffic updates, (Not sure about in Europe though) and gives you a handsfree telephone connection.

It also has European maps which helpfully include speed limits for your vehicle in miles or kms. providing you keep the maps updated should be no problem.

There are a number of reviews online from independent sources if you search online.

I use one as well and very happy with it. Another feature is that your speed is displayed and it it much easier  to read than the speedo on the Fiat Ducato dashboard.

That’s a big benefit for us. Can’t see the speedo on our Boxer.

The Garmin also “pings” if you exceed the speed limit which is very useful on the continent with everything in kph and unfamiliar limits.

I would buy the standard Garmin with lifetime maps and traffic. The traffic reports are detected by the power lead that plugs into your cigarette lighter. The speed limit data is very accurate (at least, in France). The navigation like all SatNavs is variable!

I would download Archies POIs which will give you nearly every site in Europe and is updated from user feedback so very accurate.
