No doubt been covered before, however I cannot find the thread, so:

flushing out the hot and cold water system (and the aquaroll [other containers are available])

how often should you do this? and with what? - i have used Milton, but only for the second time this year. is that enough?

what is the official stance

I don't think there is an official stance, I used to do it but now just drink bottled water and use the 'imported' stuff for washing up.

Actually I've heard that Milton shouldn't be used and that Puriclean is better, see here for the explanation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0t0_fz79OJA&t=386s

There is no official stance and you do what you are comfortable with. I don't sterilise and I simply drain the system after each stop. There is some water left in the system and when I purge on new set up this goes into a kettle and us used for first brew. Some will not drink water out of the system

Quite correct I think. I have once in 38 years used the product because we had a chemical taint in a fairly new van some 15 years ago

We have never felt the need to flush the water systems ,including aqua rolls or other containers, we have never used water from the LV systems for drinking as we carry a seperate container for that and filling kettle,,but we are using our caravan a lot, so maybe it keeps the pipes free of any need to "flush"the system,

If the  c/van is not going to be used we drain the truma tank and leave taps open

NEVER use Milton 'cos its liable to attack any metalwork in your tank, pipes etc !

The water cleansing system used Chez ABM is

AQUA SOL - one capful per 25 litres / 5 gallons should be enough to ensure your tanks and water are  " Fit For Purpose " as the modern saying goes.  I use the built in water tanks for all purposes and have not suffered any problems so far in 40 years m/homing

After the start of your season you should be quite safe unless you know you are going well off the beaten track where water may be of doubtful purity, then another treatment is justified.

Just for balance.....we do use the water from the van taps for drinking, we clean the system before each tour, a tour for us these days is about 4-5 weeks, 3 times per year at present.

We use Puriclean, and always have.

Milton is a weak solution of sodium hypochlorite (bleach) and should never be used on caravan water systems because, over time, it will attack the metal in the boiler. Puriclean, however, is safe to use.

I only clean ours about once or twice a year and we do drink from the tap water (via a Britta type filter) with no ill effects. That said, the van is in use every month and the throughput of water is quite high.

If you store water over a period of time such as in an onboard MH tank perhaps and it remains unused for a month or two then I would consider it necessary to flush and clean before next usage.

We do have an onboard tank in our caravan, which we use all the time when on a site, but we usually empty it for travelling.

However, both  the tank and the pipes are quite difficult to empty 100%, so I prefer to err on the side of safety and use Puriclean before each trip.

On site we have a large throughput of water, so nothing is sitting in the tank or pipes for very long.
