Is there a rule about dog enclosures?

Reading on another forum how people have been told different things on different CC sites about the use of enclosures.  This wasnt about whether the dog was on a lead or not it was about the actual physical putting up of an enclosure - or not being allowed to.
So, is there an actual rule or is it wardens discretion whether you can put one up?

We personally dont use them, or tether ours very often - as they prefer to be inside with us, but just curious.

I agree that my choice would be to have my pet and friend with us, not in an enclosure or a cage.

I don't know what the rules say, but I hope they are banned.

I've seen dog enclosures, more commonly on non club sites actually. In one way I can understand that folk might want to use them to stop their dog(s) being disturbed by passers by. I've lost count of the number of times we've got ours settle only for them to be disturbed by well meaning passers wanting to make a fuss of them. Luckily ours are quite amenable to fuss and attention and settle quickly again. I think the one big thing against them, though, is if dogs are kept in them for long periods and allowed to foul the pitch.

To answer the OP, I'm not sure there's a rule as such, but we certainly woudn't consider using them.

I think it always very difficult to answer a question which is essentially third hand. Whilst many things might fall within warden discretion at the very least I would expect an explanation. Unless we know what has been said to those that "post on other forums" it is difficult to form a view one way or another?

I have only seen one in all my visits, a few years ago at Troutbeck head, going up to the service pitches there is one pitch where the gravel on the awning side almost touches a solid thick dry stone wall about four feet high. The people on it had erected wind breaks to form a 'fence' from their caravan at the front and back to the wall crossing to the wall. In it they had two smallish dogs in the 'enclosure'. The dogs didn't make much noise and they simply sat with their owners most of the time during the day, or at least when we passed the pitch on the way to the shower block.

We are taking our young puppy away, so we are taking our crate. Its not a cage, but a safe and comfortable place where she can voluntarily retreat to when she feels like it and it helps keep her but of trouble when she is getting a bit too excited. Should this be banned too?

Just a viewpoint from the other side of the fence, (ie a non dog owner) surely if you put a dog run or enclousre up on the pitch the dog will then foul and urinate where and when they want, this can not be nice for the next member who uses the pitch.  I have had to stop my grandchildren playing on the grass on and near our pitch many a time because of residue dog mess and signs of urination. You cannot wonder why some members get upset by the amount of dogs on site and the attitude of dog owners that we will bring as many dogs on site as we want and do what we want with our pets.

The club rules say dogs should not be allowed to foul the pitches, that dogs should be on leads/tethered and that they should not be permitted to cause annoyance to others. If you witness a breach of these rules you should bring it to the attention of the warden.

As there are no rules regarding the number of dogs allowed, it might be worth considering whether you are out of touch with the rules and, perhaps, the one whose attitude is out of step.

Tinwheeler, I am not out of touch with the rules, you have stated clearly in you post the very thing I am trying to say. Dogs should be on a lead/tethered, well they are not on a lead/tethered in a dog run. Dogs should not be permitted to cause annoyance to others, re-read my post, it annoys me when I find the grass around my pitch yellowed from dog urination and residue of fouling. And yes I have complained to the wardens when the dog fouling is very bad, So please do not tell me my attitude is out of step.

I might have said the very thing you were trying to say, Broadside, but you didn't say that. The place to complain about dog fouling is on site to the warden, so well done on taking the correct course of action.

I have not said your attitude is out of step - read my words again - as your first post suggested you were not au fait with the rules, I questioned whether your knowledge of the rules and your attitude might, perhaps, be worth some consideration. It seems you are fully aware and it was only the wording of your post that conveyed the wrong impression.

I've seen these windbreak/dog enclosures on a few sites some C&MC some not.

The only issue I have with them is that you can't SEE what the dogs are doing behind them. We know that responsible folk will take their dogs for a walk to do their business, however we also now that there are a few lazy so and so's out there that don't.

I would hate to be on a pitch after one of these types of people have used it, it doesn't make any difference whether its grass or h/s it will still be unpleasant.

Yep. OK thanks Tinwheeler. The trouble with posts like these, especially about dogs and the amount of dogs on site, is that it is easy to misjudge people because the two sides are so far apart (ie those that have dogs and those who do not) I use mostly club sites and really enjoy all of our trips, the reason I use the club sites is because of the quality, cleanness and you know exactly the quality you can expect. Obviously from my post (and others in the past) I am uncomfortable with the amount of dogs on site because of obvious reasons but I tolerate it, that dose not make me a nasty person who hates dogs or their owners.

Of course it doesn't make you a nasty person, Broadside.

Again and again members on this forum have condemned the irresponsible dog owners who cause problems on site. Thankfully they seem to be the minority but they also seem not to read the posts on here.

The club allows unlimited numbers of dogs and it's unfortunate if that makes you uncomfortable but I think we have to be realistic and accept there are probably some things that most of us are uncomfortable with. The club us very unlikely to curb dog numbers as long as they bring fee paying owners with them.

Yes I agree Tinwheeler, but when some members are not satisfied with the fact that they can bring as many dogs on site as they want and they want even more freedom for the dogs (enclosures, better dog walks, showers for dogs, better stones on pitches so it dose not hurt the dogs feet, more dog friendly pubs, etc.) I do get a little hot under the collar, especially after I have had a few glasses of wine!!!.

Hi David, No I am not new to the forum, use it a lot and enjoy some of the debates and have a say on some of them, I find it is good extension to the caravanning which we enjoy. I am fully aware that any adverse comments about dogs on site can cause a lot of bad feeling and some 'not so good replies' but I do feel quite strongly about this issue and I try to be as diplomatic as I can about it, but not always successfully!!!  It would be nice if this issue could be discussed openly and without bad feeling on this forum, but I think that maybe asking to much.

Broadside ,you are fully entitled to voice your options on this subject, and you have the right approach to it, I agree with you that there are some dog owners that would better not owning a dog ,you will not be berated by me ..........

I agree that you shouldn't let your dog foul in or around the pitch, most dog owners will know that most dogs won't foul the place they habit/rest in. I certainly don't let mine do it. But I see nothing wrong in creating a small additional area linked to your awning doorway to allow them to roam free in said area. Is it not also a case that some of the local wildlife can leave all sorts of mess on the grass around a pitch?

But as the club recognizes accidents happen and as long as its cleared up what's the problem.

I don't think I would want to be a member of a club that started segregating members either,  No dog sites, or only in certain parts. Adults only (no children sites) and so on.  where would it stop, your caravan / motorhome is too old for the clubs public image.

To answer the OP, I don't think there is a specific rule.

I've only seen 'dog enclosures' a few times on club sites.  They seemed to have been erected by members with multiple dogs.

I spoke to one lady, who had a wire fence type enclosure for her 3 show dogs.  She explained that tethering 3 dogs was difficult, because they all got tangled up.  She had a grooming table within the enclosure, where the dogs were groomed every morning.  The dogs (as far as we could see) were exercised, and toileted off site.

I would assume that as long as the enclosures are within the pitch boundary, they would be allowed, much the same as awnings, windbreaks etc.

Yes, these enclosures are allowed but the dogs within them should still be tethered.

    Good question Milothedog.

Assuming the 'enclosure' were secure, I can't see why dogs within them should need to be tethered?

As a dog owner, we often create a run from our awning to corner of caravan, this allows the dog some freedom but is within control of us. Dogs just don’t urinate and foul every 5 mins, just like humans don’t!! It’s also no different from having noisy children or adults late at night in their awnings causing a disturbance 😡
