DVLA, including the eV948 Document
Well, we've had a bit of a day today. Driving from Redruth to Hunter's Moon CAMC site, at some stage, the numberplate fell off the back of the car. Only found out when we arrived at Hunter's Moon.... Of course, managed to leave the Car log book back at home so it's impossible to get a 'legal' replacement. However you can get an eV948 'e document'. Anyone any idea how you get one? DVLA website is about as useful as a chocolate fireguard, and the phone lines are closed until tomorrow.
We're making do with a piece of card at the moment. Totally illegal, but the only option.
I think we're due thunderstorms tonight, so will have to take the numberplate in save it getting wet....

Yes, I wondered about that or something similar WN, but we don't have any of the velcro to hand. Thought blutak would hold cardboard but not the number plate. Besides, if I can find out how to get an eV948 tomorrow it would save having to take the number plate off the caravan. Thanks so much for the thought.

Hi David. I did read this, but have now re-read it. The first time, I read it quickly and in panic!! I think this eV948 might just be for those who have just acquired personalised registration numbers? I'm still going to ring them tomorrow for advice. Thanks for the thought. 👍
I'll let you know how it goes.

all which shows how someone in officialdom is so far from the real world that they have created such bureaucracy that prevents someone from staying legal in Dave's situation.
I've just written the reg onto white/yellow tape with a magic marker as a temporary plate before now.

DD has the right idea. We use this company for replacement plates,
Perfectly legal, reliable, good quality. We have had a number of plates from them, quick delivery.
The bureaucracy around DVLA is staggering. Four weeks after getting our new car, we are still awaiting documents to enable us to transfer our private plates onto it. We are in limbo, no documents means we are possibly going to have to buy another plate in the current number just to stick on our bike rack for a couple of weeks. Meanwhile, we have half a dozen plates with our private number on! (caravan, bike rack, load carrier, trailer etc......) We sit waiting for post every day, hoping our docs turn up. Not best pleased...😡

I did my transfer over the internet with DVLA using the retention number when I removed it from first car. If it's the V5c your waiting for then it's probably the dealers fault for not sending straight away as they tend to wait till they have a few to send all at once.

It's about time we had a bit of joined up thinking with a comprehensive passport/drivinglicence/NI record/NHS card/ Personal Vehicle plate for each citizen. Mind you, given the government's propensity for cock-ups on any sort of centralised IT/ database project, perhaps it's not such a good idea.

I sympathise. The V5 for our MH, bought back in March, came with the wrong colour on it. It took almost 3 months and jumping through several hoops to get them to agree to change it. This of course required sending the wrong one back. That was 6 weeks ago, since when they have supposedly sent it out twice, but nothing has yet arrived.
I wouldn't be that bothered but we want to take it abroad in the Autumn and I can't really book a ferry if I don't know we are going to get it in time.😡

Nothing in post again today. We’ve given up to be honest, won’t bother with bike rack. It’s stuff like this that really annoys me, our Government and it’s Departments are seriously just not fit for purpose.
I have another hoop to jump through in September, one that had me in tears of frustrated rage last time I needed to sort it. It won’t happen again, I shall go in with both guns loaded and primed this time.

Had a phone conversation with the DVLA about my number plate. Basically, if you don't present a V5 or other acceptable DVLA listed document, there is no way of getting a numberplate. No emergency/ contingency system for getting a numberplate. In the end, after discussing our limited options, and as it was such a nasty wet day limiting what we could do anyway, we decided to make the 160 journey home in the car with an illegal cardboard number plate in order to get the V5 from home. Fortunately we got away with it.
Another difficulty actually finding someone who could make up a square rear numberplate immediately. Our local Halfords only produce the oblong ones! In the end, we found a company who could do it, but they needed 2 hours to get the blank - no problem as it would take us a littl over 3 hours to get there!!

From my experience with the DVLA I have a totally different view. When my wallet containing my driving licence was stolen in Rome they couldn't have been more helpful. I phoned on the Friday before everything closed down for four days in the UK because of an extended Bank Holiday weekend. Not only did they arrange for a new licence to be sent to my home address they faxed a document detailing my authority to drive to the Campsite we were staying at in Rome, which arrived overnight. Any new vehicles I have had registered the V5 has always come through quickly.

Couldnt fault that aspect of the service David. We went away for three days to try the van out and it was on the mat when we got home. Trouble was it was wrong in relation to colour, stating it as black. The only black bit is the wing mirrors, the rest being silver. It took until the beginning of July (3 months ) to get it changed on the data base. They sent out a revised one on the 12th July which never arrived and a second one a week ago, which also hasn't arrived, fingers crossed for today🤞. I think as with most large government agencies, it is very much the luck of the draw.

We have new docs for car, all we are trying to do is put our private plate onto this new car. We have the plates, but they haven’t sent the relevant documents showing the change, so we can’t put them on. Means all the plates on our bike rack, load carrier etc.. are not usable at the moment.
Things used to be a lot easier, as recent as a four five years ago, but things have changed. Even dealers selling used cars are getting frustrated.
Good to know they are helpful if you are overseas though. How recent was that DK?

No such luck. Post has been and no V5.☹️ Either there is a black hole between here and Swansea or whatever their system says they aren't being sent out.👎
I'll ring if it doesn't come tomorrow and ask if I can pay to have it couriered. Although I suspect they aren't organised enough to allow for that.

It’s quite simple Steve. Like many other agencies, the DVLA simply doesn’t have enough staff. Staff cost money, they have drivers held to ransom, unable to do anything at all to improve circumstances. No sign of our documents either. Five weeks and counting now......

It is all very confusing. The last time that I had a plate made up was 7 years ago and I needed my registration document. March this year I was having the car serviced and I arranged for the garage to fit a new rear number plate as the existing one had been cracked for a year or three. 'You'll need me to bring the registration document' I said. I was told no, just need proof of your address?

The difference is, I suspect, that the garage did not need the V5 because they had absolute proof that the plate would be fitted to the correct vehicle. What they needed to confirm was the ID/address of the plate purchaser.

It is a ridiculous situation if a garage cannot replace or repair a damaged number plate on a vehicle which is physically in front of them with a good plate at the other end without need of a V5.. Only yesterday I removed the rear plate of our van which was held on by the skin of its teeth due to the adhesive pads softening in the afternoon sun over the past weeks. I replaced it having cleaned the surface with twice as many pads. Goodness knows what I would have done had it dropped off 300 miles away.

The garage does not make the plates though TW. The plate would have been ordered/collected from nearby supplier by the garage. The address confirmation was not for the garage. The chap has dealt with me for over 26 years and knows me well enough.

I don't know if the garage you use also sells new cars but if they do the supplier of number plates will be used to producing them for the garage to put on new cars so perhaps there is a specially arrangement as the garage actually registers the new car.
I know it's naughty but I have, in the past, ordered show plates from the internet and used those on a lighting board. Given that the letter spacing meets the rules and they look like real plates I can't really see the police being that interested. I see so many personalised plates that clearly don't meet current rules and they seem to get away with it!
