Raised jockey wheel .

Recently on site's I've noticed quite a few caravans being pitched with the jockey wheel in the up position . I can't for the life of me see what this achieves, other than the potential to put excess stress on the front steadies,and in the long term damage the floor pan. Am I missing something here ?, would appreciate your views on this.

    Raising the jockey wheel will cause stress on the front steadies as they normally are using the floor as support where as the rear steadies are connected direct to the steel chassis

    I don’t think you're missing anything, Trellis. You've stated the reasons why it’s not sensible.

    The floor is supported by the axle and the corner steadies at each end. Lowering the jockey wheel is fine, but not essential. I always leave the jockey wheel down, but only because it happens to be in that position when I pitch.

    We leave the jockey wheel in situ after levelling front to back, drop the steadies, plug in electricity and bobs your uncle. Time for a beer.

    We have seen caravans pitched with raised jockey wheels on site. 

    I always thought the caravan steadies were just that and not meant to bear the weight of the van. undecided We always leave the jockey wheel lowered.

    If you have a automatic leveling system fitted then the jockey wheel has to be raised off the ground as that's how the system works. It can only raise the front end not lower it. The system will not even start if the front end is not low enough.
