Squealing brakes

I purchased a Elddis 554 from Glossops in Derbyshire On March 2017, In August 2017 after travelling 100 miles the nearside wheel left the caravan and disappeared, when I found a safe place to stop, I discovered that the whole axle/brake assembly had burnt out, resulting in a twelve week delay repairing the caravan, and fitting a completely new axle, since this time the brakes started squealing slightly, but now they are turning heads whenever we go through towns stopping and stating, Come on ALKO find a proper solution before we go to another chassis maker!!!!!!

This isn't the type of post that the Story Section is intended for.  It really should be in the Discussions under Caravan Section.

sorry to  hear of your terrible experience, many of us have had squealing brakes but have been lucky to avoid your complete failure. I would  suggest that you report this to the DVSA as this clearly is a serious safety issue and should be investigated in conjunction with brake and axle problems.

Alko and the caravan industry have so far convinced DVSA that there are no safety issues with brakes or axles, your incident may help trigger a recall. I as many others have reported brake and axle safety related faults.

This can be done easily on line.

We too have squealing brakes, ours are to be replaced next week.

It would appear from info on another thread, that Alko used (for a period of time) a different manufacturer which has resulted in many vans across all makes having these problems.

I believe that they have now gone back to the original supplier. The year of when the axle was made is important, if you are able to get under the van and have a look at the plate it will tell you the year. Once you have that info your dealer should pursue it for you with Alko.

We had the squealing brakes problem on our 2017 Swift, occurring first during a 2018 French trip. It was fixed by a modification under warranty at the next service, and since then, no problems.

whether or not the burn-out described by the OP is the same problem at source as simply squealing brakes, I wouldn’t want to say. There was no suggestion that our brakes were in any way faulty as they worked fine, but just noisy.

Yesterday our caravan had new 'shoes' fitted to the brakes. Hopefully that will now stop the noise, time will tell.

Dealer says its an ongoing issue across all makes of vans for the certain years.
