Worried About Borrowdale

Been the proud owner of our first ever motorhome for less than a week and have just spent 3 nights at Chirk trying it out.  For our 2nd trip, I have booked Borrowdale, but the more I read, the more concerned I am about access accross Grange bridge.  I have driven over this in the past, in a car with no problem, but having looked at Google Streetview, the sign at the start of the crossing says the width is 6'6".  Personally, I think that it is wider than that, but it does not stop me being concerned about crossing it in my new motorhome, for which the specification states the habitation width is 7'6" and with a cab width of 8'2".  I am equally concerned abouth the risk of grounding on the 2 hump backs as my chassis is an AL-KO.  Does anyone have any direct experience crossing this bridge with a motorhome?

Thanks in advance.

Paul

We have a caravan but our width is 7'8" and had plenty of room crossing the bridge in May. The entrance to the site needs a bit of care. Might be best to have someone watch you in there

Whilst there I would say that over 50% of the units were Motorhomes, some quite large.

I wouldn't be worried. After all buses cross the bridge. Just needs some care.

Check out the reviews on the site page. I'm sure some Motorhomers will be along and give you some reassurance.

Yes, our Auto Sleepers Gloucester made the transit several times with no issue. Hopefully the water taxi to Keswick is running again and the local busses are fairly regular.

As well as Grange Bridge, I would also drive carefully down the the road down Dewentwater to the bridge,as it has become very busy over the last few years, is used by  double decker buses , and delivery vans and lorries who do not drive particularly slow, as well as holiday traffic.

I think the main thing is waiting till the bridge is clear and with a motorhome you've probably got a higher cab view of the road so all should be ok.

I've just zoomed in on GoogleEarth and measured it at 10ft. Nothing to worry about. if you want to play safe, a smear of Duckhams down the sides. wink

Hi We have been to Borrowdale (Low Manesty) as it was then, and with caution you will be fine.I can remember the bridge does come up quickly as you come out of a bend, just make sure its clear, then a left and sharp right by the tea rooms. The lovely site is heavily wooded so take time choosing pitch.Walk to Borrowdale at the base of Castle Crag.
