The "Peedee method" of drag and drop photos

A recent addition to "Your Stories" has loads of excellent photos. When asked how they got more than the statuary 5 in, the reply was  by using the "Peedee drag and drop method".

There is a tutorial thread on how to upload photos but I admit to being disinclined to wade through all 440+ posts there! Peedee, or anyone else, would you be kind enough to explain, please?

I don't have the pics stored online, they're on a hard drive here.

At some point I'll then get round to writing up our Hebridean trip with more than 5 images.

Thanks.

Apart from the five photos you can add in the normal way I have only been able to extra photos into the text of he story if they are hosted online. In my case from my own website.I do have to use Firefox to make it work though. I thought someone experimented with dragging and dropping from Facebook. I am sure others will be along to offer advice. Although not a tidy way of doing things you can add extra photos direct from your computer, suitably resized, by replying in the comment box after you have published your story.

We're back at Tain l'Hermitage on our way home. Free wifi not good down our end so using Cath's precious data allowance on 4g    I will try to explain how I insert photos later and how you can insert a slide show as an alternative. All solutions require an on line photo storage e.g. Flickr and a programme to resize your photos.

Thank you both. I think at present the "untidy" way David suggests might be our best bet, as we're troglodytes who don't use online storage. Quite happy resizing photos, though, with "Gimp" GNU.

Here's an example of a simple drag and drop from Flickr: our son's cat who has been lodging with us for a while!

I have just taken my old dell n5010 apart and fitted a SSD in place of the HDD. I've also installed windows 10. I'm about to drag a photo from flckr to here to see if it still works....

"with Firefox you can drag and drop from other places too!"

chasncath - Just curious.  Is this possible only with Firefox because the photos have already been re-sized on the club's website or does Firefox have inbuilt re-sizing and therefore would it would it be possible to bring in photos from other websites ?

I resize our photos to 600 pixels wide, using 'easy thumbs' or 'paint' on windows, before uploading them to Flickr. However, using the download button on Flickr it allows you to choose a size. You don't actually download the photo, just click on the downloadable image and drag it into your open ct page. Firefox is the only browser that I've managed to do this with. David K reckons that CT also uses Firefox and there may be some connection.

Most web pages seem to allow drag and drop. Not google photos or OneDrive.

It was a long time ago now that I was at Club HQ learning about the forum before it went live but certainly at that time they were using Firefox but of course it may have changed since.

When using the drag and drop from another source you do have to have the two tabs open side by side. I don't have to resize as all the photographs on my website have already been resized in kb size so that is not an issue for me. This helps with the banner photos at the top of the page. However the physical dimensions of the photograph may need changing as the display pane of this forum is too narrow and will tend to squash the picture to fit as can be seen below. Interestingly the display pane in the story section allows a slightly wider photograph where on the forum probable 500 pixels wide is about the maximum.  What I tend to do is to make them smaller 600 or 700 pixels wide and save them separately to an area of my website.  I find that Firefox is easy to use in that respect. I usually write the story and publish it with just the pictures in the heading and then go back and edit where I drag the pictures from my website into the appropriate place in the main story text. Before you drag you do have to have a cursor in the story where you want to place the photo otherwise it might not work. All this is done on a PC with a large monitor which makes working easier than on a small screen. As an experiment I have tried to do the same in Chrome. You need to enable the  the tab extension which allows two pages to be displayed side by side and it seems to work.

Thanks to all for the info.  Like the OP I store my photos on my Laptop where I resize using Paint, found how to do it on CT some time back, and then transfer to a stick.  I use Chrome as I had some "problems" with Firefox again some time back. Not knowing IT I gave up Firefox & went back to Chrome.  I got this from the CC website but don't know how to enable tab extension to allow 2 pages side by side just had to drag 1 slightly lower than the other to enable drag & drop.  Hope picture stays.

In Chrome and in Firefox you can open additional tabs by clicking on the + at the top of the screen.- not side by side but you can have the CT page open on one tab and the source of photos on the other.

In Chrome you need to go to Extensions and enable tabs. Once you have done that a small blue box with a diagonal arrow will appear at the top of the page to the right of the web link address box. If you have both pages you want to work from open click on the blue box and the screen should show two windows side by side.

In the background I've been trying various ways to drag and drop! I used to be able to copy from here but that doesn't seem to work for me anymore...frown Anyway it's been worth a try as those extra photos in stories do make a difference. smile

David - Thanks for the Tab extensions info which unfortunately doesn't appear on my Laptop.  I have managed to drag & drop from CC to this thread & like learning but probably won't use the method as I store on laptop.

This is what I got when I went to extensions.

It looks as if you virus software is blocking you, I can't quite make out the text. You could turn the it off whilst you activate the extensions?

Drag and drop doesn't work using tablets at least I haven't yet found a way of doing it.

Wow, I hadn't realised life was so complicated!

David K, when you demonstrated above how the browser tends to squash images yesterday... I'm using Firefox here, and I get blank rectangles! Strange are the ways of these computers, which are of course designed to make our lives easier embarassed

Meanwhile, having asked the original question, I regret I've not had time to experiment with any of this recently! But I will. I'm glad it's proving a potentially useful discussion, however. Thanks all for joining in.

A point to note is that photos dragged and dropped from external (cloud) sources will not be visible to anyone viewing CT via the free access on Club sites. You need to be connected to the World Wide Web!

I am pretty certain photos have to have URL (web address) before being able to be added to the forum and stories by dragging from another application. This does not apply to photos added using the add photos button below the posting page when you are writing a new post/story which are uploaded directly from your computer providing they meet the requisite size. It is a major flaw of this forum that you can't just add any photo with a URL just by adding a link! Don't suppose that will change anytime soon.

Interesting - I was logged in properly from our home PC and still the ones in question are invisible.

So just to keep things looking pretty, here's a character we met on Coigach, but uploaded the old fashioned way 'coz it's currently the only route available to me.

Hedgehurst, for your account of your trip you could create a slide show. Sometime back I created a slide show in Google docs. (You have to sign up to a google account). Using the instructions for inserting a video on the 'How to' thread, you can embed the sldes on here. Or used to be able! I've just failed!!

    Chas

Don't you have to have a YouTube account ti insert a video? When you say slideshow do you mean the five photos you can add to a story using the Club's Add Photos box? The way I do that is to save them to my Desktop (PC or Laptop) and just use the add photos button to load them into the slideshow. It's the same for adding photos to  a discussion without the need to drag and drop.

David, back in 2016 I noticed that Rochelle's instructions on how to load photos and videos were, in fact, Google Slideshows. I managed to embed a slideshow back then which is still working on about page 7 of that thread.

I tried to do the same again today with this result!

I think it's changed, things I could do on here with photos (not up to your standards Chasncath or David!) seem now to be out of reach. I get a tool bar instruction from my PC if I want to copy anything from here but so far the ctrl+ whatever doesn't seem to work.
