Damp Bailey front lockers

HI all, our 2011 Bailey 534 was serviced today and was 100% damp in all 3 lockers and there  was black mould everywhere underneath the trays and 60% damp around the door.

I have had it serviced every year and no previous damp was found. I am unsure of what to do ( apart from cry) was there supposed to be some fix for a known problem with damp in this area of the caravan.

Am I best contacting Bailey, or the dealer in the first instance, we bought it used in 2013. Any information would be gratefully received.

Your contract is with the dealer so you need to contact them.

I don't know what warranty you have but, if the van is out of warranty then any service agent will be able to give you a quote for repair.

If you still have some warranty left then you definitely need to contact your dealer.

You have to transfer the warranty, and even if this is done you will need the service book stamped to show it was serviced as prescribed by Bailey, and probably have to produce the accounts.

The sale would have been covered by the Sale of Goods Act which requires the product to be of merchantable quality i.e. free from faults. To pursue the dealer you would have to show that the faults existed at the time you bought it which is probably impossible to do.

I hope Bailey will accept your claim but if the warranty was not transferred or you do not have service records for the first two years there may be a problem.

I am assuming this is an Olympus and has the 10 year warranty which applied only to early Alutech models. If I am correct the problem should not be as serious as with conventional construction.

Hi, It does have a 10 year water ingress warranty, I contacted Wanda-home( dealer) and I have booked it for a damp assessment (£70) and I will take it from there, I have all the service reports since we bought it but not the first 2 years.

It is a Pegasus 534 2010 model but sold new in 2011.

I will see what happens from there.

My dad has recently had a similar issue with a Bailey Pegasus 2015. The repair company confirmed that there is a know design issue with the lockers pre 2015/16. You’ll notice all newer models have a small lip installed above all lockers along with a notice in all external lockers stating they should be silicon sealed regularly.

Hopefully you’ll be able to get somewhere with the dealer and warranty, but if not, as Wildwood mentioned you can look into the sales of good act, something that in this case you may be able to get somewhere with if you can collate evidence of a known design flaw.

    Best of luck

Damp in the front lockers was a recognised fault on the 2010 Alutec’s.

I purchased a 2010 Pegasus 534 in 2013. On getting it serviced by a independent/approved service agent, they informed that there was a recall/ modification and they would contact Bailey, who did authorise the work. It involved stripping out the trays and water proofing the floor then removing the outside trim and sealing the lower seams including the front grab handles.

2010 models had the dark glass gas locker doors and small front bumpers.

Bailey did supply some protection panels for above the bumper as there were complaints of stone chips.

In 2011 they fitted larger bumpers and changed the locker door to body coloured, that is how you can tell the 2010 model

It’s a common fault on these models Joann. I have just sold mine and had to have it fixed before I could P/ex. I had a 10 yr warranty with mine and had had it serviced every year in time- Bailey stood the bill as it was just over 8 years old. Bailey also covered the bill of ingress into the washroom floor some 3 weeks earlier when I was told the van was Dry! They dry the van out and fit plastic trays by glueing them into place. The ingress is caused through the back of the grab handles where the lighting cable runs through apparently- It should be sealed. ANY Bailey dealer should, if, as you say you can prove servicing every year, repair it and Bailey should as in my case pay the bill under the warranty. As an aside, the dealers workshop foreman told me that it was inevitable that more water would find its way into the van’ in a couple of years or so’ due to the glue they use. It starts to crystallise after a few years. Not great for the future then! Apparently, and this is according to him, Swift and Coachman use a different and much better glue that lasts much longer- little comfort that! Are we all going to end up buying vans with a ten year warranty and then trading them in after nine and a half years because we know for sure that problems and expense is on its way?

Thanks for all the replies, it is a 2010 model with the black 'bin bag' coloured front locker.

I am considering trading it in when it is fixed as I have lost faith in it now,  we had water ingress once already also fixed under warranty this was in the bathroom.

Alutec vans can only get damp in the floor area (wood)as the rest of the van is all made of impregnable to water material  if there is a leak from the joints anywhere  (all makes of vans can) it would just be a case of a reseal

My 2010 Olympus has the warranty but, as I believe it states in the handbook, this is basically 6years which can be extended to 10 years. I did this at a cost of £238. Last year damp was found under the toilet floor, the dealer decided that it was due to the outside toilet door seal leaking. The shower/toilet cubicle was removed and floor replaced FOC.

Hopefully this year's service will find no damp!!!!
