The obvious answer is because they are too mean to use a proper site, apart from when they want to fill up with water and dump their waste.

Well I realise that if one or both of you have to be back for work then holiday time is important. But really,  wouldn't you arrive home more relaxed if you left Cornwall earlier, took it easy and used one of umpteen sites within minutes of the motorway rather than a layby?

We find the last arrivals time inconvenient in terms of an overnight stop going to Cornwall. We were booked into Minnows one time, got badly delayed through no fault of our own but of course to late to get on site. So we stayed on a CL for £5 a couple of miles further on at Sampford Peverell. It was so lovely we stayed for a few nights when returning home. Wouldn’t do a conventional lay-by nowadays though. Usually filthy and too vulnerable.

I very much doubt that they would base an entire holiday on doing that.

We certainly saw quite a number of motorhomes in Cornwall spending their time in the same layby during our 5 nights near Hayle

There’s one near the CAMC site that’s been there for at least 2years!

You can see the same vans day after day in the clifftop parking areas and lay-bys.

Have to agree, some MHs down in the Hayle/Marazion area are spending weeks at a time in lay-bys. We used to play a guessing game each day on how many would be parked up on the front facing St Michaels Mount. Some never moved in a fortnight, parked bumper to bumper. Council finally got fed up and banned parking altogether there now, it’s a cycle path and footway, with a big raised kerb. Mix of foreign and UK vehicles.

Never assume that others think as you do, WTG.😟

I do hope your use of ‘bludgeoned’ was another example of humour only it’s really hard to tell at times. That’s where a few😀😁😃come in handy. 👍🏻👍🏻

I have no trouble at all in detecting unwarranted rudeness and sarcasm if that’s what you mean.

You could well be right. In which case the motorhomer might have been ‘breaking his journey’ for 3 years. 😀

We love Cornwall, so max out our time down here.

I work nights, Im at an age now I cant finish work Saturday morning to make it down here same day, passed that marathon years back.

So our plan has for umpteen holidays book an extra night to leave early evening, gains us another day down here and travelling back in quiet traffic. Works well, no lost time.

Maybe next year it will all change, looking at store and pitch as an option.

In a few years we will be retiring down here, so no caravan, perhaps a small motorhome, St Austell area, be afraid, be very afraid!

To answer the title of the thread, "Nothing".

Not for us anyway, the people on the CMC rally next door may have a different opinion, I suppose it's what you make of the club that is the deciding factor into a persons opinion. Only interested in the booking protocols

The club for me is a means to an end.  I like insurances, breakdown cover, travel services and the CL 's

I'm not keen on the regimentation of sites, although I use them and don't begrudge the costs, the club website i.e. CT, search system etc.

Despite Rowenna's protestations I am more likely to believe the testimony of current and former CL owners and the evidence that I see myself. Therefore I tend to agree with the OP that the club was remiss in not acknowledging the contribution that CLs bring to the membership.

As to what the club means to me then I'm with Oneputt, ie a means to an end albeit slightly different one. No more no less.

I would suggest a bit of both, AD. wink Fifty or so years ago things were mighty different form the present day, and there were also an awful lot let sites that one could use.....although saying that there were also a great many fewer caravans, and relatively few M/Hs.

I suspect a few like us, who started touring quite early in their lives loved the simplicity and lack of fuss that it gave. Hence our love of CLs and small private sites.
