Safefill - Refillable Gas Cylinders

No problem Tirril. I really hope you sort this problem! Reading the thread, particularly the last few pages, it strikes me that, what I have said about garages refusing fills because of ‘pressure ‘ from their suppliers is becoming the truth of the matter. This ladies and gentleman is about money , greed and profits! The large LPG suppliers have absolutely no incentive to ease up on the hunt to destroy, where they can, the chance to fill refillables. The small garage who fills Safefills ie stand alone cylinders when they have been leaned on by Calor and co are the true hero’s. The total elimination of the companies that offer refillables is their aim. The ‘rental stream’ has been massive in the past and they are not going to let go of it without a fight- and a vicious fight at that. Safefill has been in the teeth of that struggle and are still fighting the ‘dirty tricks dept’ of the big companies. As a group- and not an insignificant one, if you want cheaper gas, then buy a cylinder whether Safefill or anyone else’s and refill! Refuse to pay the swingeing rental costs of a cylinder that has probably been hired out 300+ times before! Technology moves on and it’s moved on in the LPG cylinder field too. Progress should make life easier and indeed, cheaper in many cases. The big LPG companies would be only too pleased to keep us in the last century.

Reading the comments about Safefill bottles, i can only say that i have had mine for approx 7 years, there depot is only 10miles from my home, and have never had any issues where i fill the bottles, i do tend to use LPG stations/Calor centres that sell LPG for cars, Morrisons have agreed that they are on board as per Safefill web site. I know of several other members that have these bottles and have never heard of any issue problems, there is an LPG members book which can be purchased and listes all the LPG stations. Previously to going on the black side (Diesel) i used several Range Rovers with LPG and again never any issue filling up.

Yes they do and they have and Do stop Safefill users using their Autogas pumps. It has happened to me with no decent reason given apart from the usual guff about no insurance, they’re unsafe etc etc. As I have proved before, I know a few things that are going on. I have followed the fortunes of Safefill from almost the beginning. If DD finds it amusing that’s great for him. It’s not the size of Safefill but what they represent and the ideas that they are implanting into caravanners and campers. At last people are seeing that they can be free from swingeing rental charges. It might be small now but it’s growing and that is what frightens them to death. If it didn’t they wouldn’t have done to SF what they have done and besides, greed knows no bounds! We need to back the good guys!

Another fantasy post - I can assure you DD that the "advice" to garage owners by the big boys supplying them with lpg is very real.
I've been to fill up cylinders, been spotted on cctv and the garage owner has come out screaming about fire risks/insurance/their supplies of lpg being cut off if I filled them. I suspect the filling of the odd refillable is not as much concern to the big companies as the filling of their rentals.
At a couple of garages I use to fill my cylinders, I sense they are uneasy about doing so but have no problem filling Calor cylinders. In fact they have charts in their offices showing 3.9 through 47 kg cylinder capacities in litres at 80% fill.

DD - it is illegal to fill rentals - you ask why do they bother - farmers, businesses and private individuals are queuing up for cheap gas and I'm convinced this is what's worrying to gas suppliers.
The future is refillable bottles - 300,000,000 people in North America can't be wrong - and we're 20 years behind them.

Safefill may not be a threat at the present time but if they take off they(Safefill) will inevitably eat into the Calor/Shell profit margin. It does make sense they are attempting to stop them before that happens. I think it’s folly to think all companies run their businesses with complete fairness particularly to potential future threats to their profit margins.

Hi Maybe of interest
I have now created a spreadsheet & map to list LPG stations that allow filling of refillable bottles. Hopefully any stations that have been mentioned on this discussion and on the other LPG one are now on there!.
Will be great if anyone can part with their knowledge regarding the filling stations that have filled bottles etc if they would post them on the new discussion or there is a form which can be filled in.

It’s not just for Safefill, BB, but any refillable bottles/systems.
In my own case, it’s a refillable tank but I know the depot I used will refill bottles as well.
