Got to Skegness and engaged the motor and went to turn the caravan and the near side was making a clunking noise and would not turn. Going forward it moved but made a clunking noise, but backwards it would not move at all.Any ideas? TIA

what noise does it make when not engaged against the wheels. if runs ok could be the drive gear between the motor and the drum.

If it is definitely a mechanical fault (can only resolve by testing with wheel off the ground in forward and reverse, then swapping electrical connections at control panel to rule that out),  IMHO this fault is located in the gearbox which may consist of a worm gear and bevel gear combination.

When you say clunking noise moving one way and not moving at all in opposite direction, do you mean motor does not work OR motor works but roller does not rotate?

Does the control panel trip on overcurrent?

There have been reports of a pin that locks a gear to the shaft coming out (but if out, this would stop any movement at all on that motor) If the pin is partially out, it may be catching. In any case, the gearbox would have to be taken apart and checked. This is not a straightforward job if it is one of the riveted ones.

Look at this for some advice on gearbox repair if it's the same as yours:

AFAIK, there are very limited to no options for companies offering gearbox repairs and spares are unavailable unless you DIY and it's a simple fault.

May need to buy a second hand system and replace the offending motor/gearbox?

Control boxes can be repaired at:

Who gives very good service, but I don't think this is the problem in your case however, multiple checks and more details will be needed before you can be sure.

I have had this effect when the A-frame has been too low at the front and has stopped the jockey wheel from swining awound sideways.

We had the same problem with the off side  unit stopped working and due to us going on holiday a few days later we bought a complete new mover, the holiday was delayed only a few days so we still got the ferry as planned.  However, I kept the parts an have a good nearside gear unit in the garage,  We are at the moment on holiday and will not be back for a few weeks,  if you are interested the unit is available.  Our unit is a 2008 model TE.
