Has anyone ever used this. Probably no need with Sat nav's. However just now I used it thinking it would give me the caravan route from Leyburn to Rosedale Abbey avoiding Sutton Bank.

I was gob smacked. Not only does it direct you up Sutton Bank but it then goes via Hutton le Hole  going down Rosedale Chimney, 1:3 I think, into the village of Rosedale.

At the foot of the page there is a disclaimer which says in part, "Routes provided may include roads unsuitable for vehicles towing trailers or caravans". So what use is the route planner to anyone. A statement like that tells you not to use any route at all because as a stranger you have no idea what's ahead.

Am I missing something?

    “Am I missing something?”

Only the several other threads where it’s been pointed out, Harry😂😂😂

    Sorry, no offence intended. 🙂

Me thinks not only a waste of time but a dangerous one too.

I find it handy at times for giving a rough idea of mileage between sites. It’ll be a very rough idea as it will inevitably choose a different route to the one I use.

Well, I've missed the several threads myself, Harry.

As we will be travelling from Bridlington to Thirsk soon I inputted the info and yes, we were also directed via Sutton Bank.

What an absolute shambles. Shame on the Club. Whoever is responsible for this should be sacked.

Notice to club. CERTAIN MEMBERS USING THIS FACILITY MAY BE TOWING CARAVANS.

Only a couple of weeks ago we drove down Rosedale Chimney,  yep its steep, narrow and curved. Makes Sutton Bank look like a speed hump.

I cant imagining taking a caravan or even a motorhome up or down it. There wouldnt be many items left in the cupboards if you did!

There Is a caravan site at Rosedale Abbey, full when we went by, the folk probably went the long way round!

The route planner is a standard one and not a very good one at that. It seems to give you the shortest route irrespective of anything else. I did put in Broadway to Abbey Wood once and it showed a route through Central London which even those with a small car would avoid.

It does have a use as a way of calculating distances and suggesting some routes, but if people miss the disclaimer it could be dangerous and should be substituted with one that allows you to enter the size and weight of your outfit.

Why would anyone use this route planner in preference to using Google maps? - just wondering.

I do not use it for our journey but it is handy quick reference to find out a journey time or when I forget to fill in our trip log of towing milages, we use the sat nav and then sites directory for final aproach instructions

I never bother using it. I was just wanting to know, as the route takes in Sutton Bank, what CMC advised caravanners to take.

Re your advice to use Google Maps, I have just tried it and it says Sutton Bank and Rosedale Chimney also. So it's no much use either at showing a recommended route for caravans.

There is a caravan route laid down to miss out the bank but obviously CMC and Google don't know it.

One other point that is not really a problem is that every 200 miles it tells you to stop for a rest which is generally quite reasonable. On one route however it did come up with this, but the next instruction was turn left into the site.
