I was going to say that Hebden Bridge site doesn't have a toilet block and - there you are - on your way to that very site.

Here's how they do it in Queensland.

At least at Hebden Bridge you will have no choice!  I am sure you will enjoy it as it's a lovely site. I have been emptying chemical toilets for nearly 40 years and probably don't give it a second thought. We even use our own facilities when there are good site facilities. Some people use biological washing tabs instead of branded toilet chemicals. I have tried it but stuck with the chemicals. However one positive by product of the washing tabs is that they are usually a much nicer smell than toilet chemicals!

So ...we’ve been!To Hebden Bridge Club site, we’ve had a great time and no longer loo poo virgins!! It was not a bother, there were no nasty whiffs and emptying the cassette was no worse than normal ... I did that bit, but I am used to human waste as I have been a staff nurse for years, had children and we have 2 cats and 2 dogs so it’s never bothered me AND here’s another shocker, I also COOK and sleep and shower blah blah in my van, and now I know that a whole lot more sites are open to us now, but we still like a bit of lecky so we won’t be caravanning by candlelight just yet ...and PS no I didn’t wash my hand I thought I was supposed to be hardcore from now on LOL 😝

Great to hear. Off grid isn't bad either but small steps 😂😂.

Slightly surprised given your vocation you'd left it so long before trying. I would have thought the care on the wards would be far worse 😲

Hi when we started originally in the 80'S we put a toilet in the old Swift mainly for children.   We also put our own fridge in and an electric pump primed with a bit of foot action.

There are probably lots who remember those days with basic sites one could get in at a drop of a hat. Sites that were very basic but still we enjoyed it enormously.  Now the caravans are kitted out to the limits.   The sites are brilliant even CL's are more upmarket than some of the old sites.  One thing with the club sites is you know when you arrive they're really well kept, bench mark in fact.  There may be a few moaners out there but it's usually the users and abusers who spoil it.    So now the 2 of us tend to use the excellent site facilities the toilet tends to be the drying room except for emergencies or grandchildren.    Over the past couple of years we've swapped to Eribas which we find brilliant.  Trailer tent camping without tent,  unless the awnings up. For me to use the toilet in van would be to assume an emergency position in aircraft.  Studying my naval wouldn't come into it.  Harry Houdini would be in awe.   Yes we've emptied and cleaned toilets many times but you know what we really enjoy the stroll to the facilities.   That depending on the immediacy of our situation of course.  There are usually really pleasant and interesting people to chat to and plus it keeps us fit.    I think we'll keep on enjoying club sites and facilities therein and keep the toilet as a 'just in case' insurance measure.  Like a spare wheel, you know how to do it but it's there in case.  I'm afraid no ' master of the stool'  for me.

Watched a guy with his Marigolds. First he picked them up out the garage. Then sorts them out and puts them on. Removes cassette and heads for the emptying hole. Returns and puts cassette back then removes gloves and puts them back in the garage for next time. How filthy can you get.

The cassettes are easy enough to empty just using bare hands. You just give them a good wash when you get back. As for not using the onboard facilities you might as well not have them. Some of the CL’s we have stayed on are brilliant and with only 5ish on at a time very quiet.

We do use sites without a toilet block from time to time so the on board facilities are essential then but equally if it is chucking it down outside staying in is far better

As my wife will point out we paid for the onboard facilities so we should get our moneys worth. However as one warden pointed out if a site has toilets you are paying for them so you cannot win.

Hallo Everyone, Hondaman's wife here. First post here, although have been reading this forum for the best part of 8 years, caravanning, now motorhoming.   Really enjoyed reading Bev's post, having been in similar position myself. Glad to hear hers has been resolved, as has my own. Happy touring Bev

My query, on behalf of HM, is this, has anyone heard of a gadget  called an S.O.G Type F, which is connected to the toilet cassette, and somehow vents 'nasty niffs' to the outside. HM has asked another forum, but no one has been able to help. So I said I would ask Club Together posters and pick their collective brilliant brains.  Many thanks for your help, Mel.

quite a common question, but in essence, by using a fan activated when the toilet 'blade' is opened, a SOG does indeed draw air from outside the bowl, and expels it outside of the cassette.

this vent can be out through the cassette hatch or via a pipe and vent through the roof as in our van.

so, all toilet smells don't get released into the toilet room when the blade is opened as they are drawn through the cassette and away, and the air also speeds up the degradation of the waste such that many SOG users don't use any toilet additives.

Hi Mel, have heard of them, and no doubt someone else will have a lot of information. Wouldn’t want to be on next pitch is my observation. If you get the chemical mix in cassette correct, it shouldn’t smell. 😀

A couple of years the service engineer servicing my caravan said his next job was to fit one of these SOG things to a caravan.  He showed it to me and explained how they worked. I considered it very anti social to inflict some of your odours into the atmosphere.  They have nothing to do with decomposing the waste in the tank and I suspect make emptying the waste a more unpleasant tasksealed.  Can't see the point of fitting one.  I use the normal liquids and my cassette does not smell.

We unfortunately parked next to a Motorhome with one fitted at Canterbury Aire. To start with I thought a local farmer was muck spreading. Then realised what it was. They can stink a bit and have a filter that needs changing. We use the blue stuff in the cassette and occasionally get a smell so just go and empty it and give it a wash out.

You just get on with it!

My OH (better half) always described the toilet as "peeing in a bucket in a corner" even though we have a full width washroom, complete with flushing toilet, hot & cold water in both hand basin and shower! Now there's no problem and one of our favourite Club sites is North York Moors outside Whitby - no facilities.

Many thanks for all your replies, all useful advice,  much appreciated. Sounds as though they can be a nuisance to your neighbour when on site. Thanks to takethedogalong for the link too. Shall have to have a rethink about these SOGs. Thank you,  Mel

We seem to have cracked things with using the bio pods in our loo, don’t get any problems at all. We are not huge fans of the cassette type loos though, we still have a porta potti in the van, and it’s so much easier to live with than the one in the MH. Mind you, I suppose a touch dodgy in MH unless firmly wedged!😱🤣😁

how do they 'do it in the van'

.......the same as anywhere else!!!  laughinglaughinglaughing

However, BevMike, we are like you....... we have been Caravanning, and before that, trailer tenting, and before that tenting, for at least forty years, and we have never stayed on a site without a toilet/ shower block.

One of the reasons we returned to caravanning after a few years tenting, was trek across the field in the middle of the night. There was wasn't much room for a Porta Potti in a miniscule two man tent

"I use the normal liquids and my cassette does not smell."

when we used "normal liquids" like Thetford blue, the cassette certwinly smelled.....of Thetford Blue, particularly nasty....

switching to Lidl/Aldi pods sorted this....and ensured a much cleaner cassette...

pour SOG vents out through the roof so no one knows we have one....

i agree, the side venting ones might not be so good...

not quite what would cause you (a van toilet user) not to be a fan of re a cassette...

it's a box underneath a toilet which needs emptying periodically and (generally, although not necessarily ) some sort of additive to 'recharge'.

OTOH, im sure we wouldn't be 'fans' of a porta potti when a proper toilet is on offer in the van....

im happy that toilet duties are kept to the toilet room, some camper vans we've seen have a potti under the kitchen sinksurprised.....really.....how can that be 'better'?
