Replacement tyres

I have had GT 6000 185R14 104/102  kargomax C tyres fitted these seemed similar to the original bailey fitted tyres .

The stability of the outfit since is  frightening I  had the worst snake ever in calm dry conditions at 55 mph being over taken by a coach. Since this was the first time out after the change loading and tyre pressures were carefully checked (65 psi) tow ball and stabiliser pads cleaned. In 30+ years of caravanning I have never been so scared.

the footprint of the tyres seems greater than before perhaps softer side walls ,  ply rating is the same as previous tyres (8 ply)

any Recommendations for another set of  tyres would be appreciated

Silly question but are you sure nothing has moved inside the van? We had new tyres fitted and on the first trip out it was definitely twitchy. After having checked things out as you have it turned out our sun loungers had moved under the fixed bed and slid towards the rear away from the axle. After putting them where they should be all was well with the world.

    65 psi seems high?!

Is that the max load number off the tyre?

What is the psi on the caravan plate?

The tyres I had fitted were a higher load rated van tyre with a 55 psi max rating, but the van plate states 45 psi and I was advised to use the van plate pressure, else it could make the van very choppy (the pressures on the tyre rated for a 3 tonne van not a 1500kg caravan).

    Thanks for the reply

The max load tyre pressure is 65psi as it was on the previous tyres

the caravan  plate pressure shows pressure as  58psi

the bailey hand book shows 65psi.

Bailey have said previously the handbook figure is the one to use

they show 65psi for all Pegasus 2 vans despite the differences in weight between vans

may I ask, have you got shock absorbers fitted to the van as makes a big difference on smoother towing.

Car tyres have 2 plies in the wall while commercial van tyre has 6 to 8 thus can be inflated to 65 psi, the only reason I know this is our local tyre dealer lives 500 yards up the road from us in the village.

Can anyone tell me the number of side wall plies on tyres they have fitted to a bailey Pegasus 2 Genoa .

The overall number of plies is  split between tread and  side wall I suspect my problem is caused by 2 ply side  walls unfortunately I do not know what the configuration of the original tyres was

                    GT 6000 185R14 104/102 kargomax C

It has 8 plies in the wall and is designed for heavy trailer and caravan use, I did read one review on them which said they had some sway when white vans went past, yell if I remember correctly it scored 3.5 out of 5 alas I can't find the link anymore

Do you have this tyre ? if so how old is it? While it appears to be the same tyre

My tyres only have 2 side wall plies and 7 overall ?
