Others may know of this but it was not something I was aware of.  "There is a growing use of weight-in-motion plates buried just under the road surface on motorways and major routes" according to "Know your Payload" in MMM about payload/overweight vehicles/DVSA.

If somebody hasn't put a stake through his heart then we're all in trouble.

I would think these are aimed at trucks where there is an absolute maximum weight limit for the vehicle and its overall weight.

With a car towing a caravan for the caravan there is no register of caravans they could check for weight details. They would need to identify the make model and year from the photograph, which even the enthusiasts on here would struggle with, and even then the MTPLM could have been uprated. Basically it is not feasible although an unusually high reading might have them check the registration number to follow up.

They could possibly pick up an overweight car or motorhome but even that would require checking out the vehicle details. On that basis unless they find something really suspicious I doubt you have to worry.

I would also expect any such system to be aimed at trucks only. I doubt whether they would be able to measure with enough resolution to pick up the average overloaded car. As Wildwood says, how would they know if a caravan is overloaded if it isn't registered?

Sort of, they know the maximum gross train weight for the tow vehicle which would be measured.

But the MTPLM of the caravan can very well be exceeded long before the combination has exceeded its maximum gross train weight.
