Number plate
Any recommendations for sticking a new number plate to rear of caravan? Used lots of strips of heavy-duty double sided adhesive tape that claims to stick anything to anything and appears to be firmly fixed but it has come off twice. Super glue the answer?

I just got mine from Halfords, sold in two sticky 'strengths' or sizes, and are called Number Plate Fixers - 6mm Adhesive Spacer Pads . They have worked so far, 6 years.

Generally speaking, if a tape feels very sticky to the touch it will have a rubber based adhesive and almost invariably come off again particularly if it gets warm. Proper automotive grade adhesive tapes sold by motor factors should have an acrylic adhesive on a thin foam carrier which is usually good for up to about 100ºC but they don't feel very sticky. They are also more expensive than rubber based tapes. Don't buy a tape just because it is the cheaper option or because it feels sticky if you want the job to last.
As has been said above, cleanliness is important on both surfaces. White spirit, methylated spirit and even lighter fuel are OK but the best is Isopropyl Alcohol.
Adhesive tapes are referred to in the trade as 'pressure sensitive adhesive tapes' because when used they need some pressure applied to them to get the adhesive to bond. This can be just firm hand pressure for a few seconds. They also need time for the bond to establish fully. This is usually about 24 hours and finally they need the surfaces to be warm, not hot, when the tape is applied to help with the adhesion.
Super glue is certainly NOT the answer!

We've always managed with the strong double sided adhesive given to us by our dealer. The only problem we had was in extremely hot conditions in direct sunlight when the plate fell off.

Never had a number plate fall off when using sticky number plate pads. I have in the past even used the stationary sticky pads ... but I've used loads & loads of them. I've even used them on car number plates that are curved when fitted ..... As above it's all in the preparation.
