Sites with bus stops nearby
We are motorhomers and like to leave our van on site and use local transport. Does anyone know of a forum or Facebook page that gives tips on good sites that suit our needs, and I'm sure a lot of other motorhomers as well. Many thanks.

I can't answer your question but if you post which area then people could reply with 'local' knowledge of sites they have been to/used.
You can also use the filters (for public transport) on the search and book page.

We like to be able to walk into nearby Villages or Towns, not too worried about Cities. 1 mile or less ideally and not along busy roads if they dont have pavements. Moreton in Marsh and Exmoor House are 2 good ones, can anyone suggest others ? thanks
unfortunately Public Transport can be withdrawn with very little notice.

Where you see a little motorhome symbol next to a site report it gives details of access to nearby towns and villages either by walking or public transport. Currently 78 sites listed as having access to walking or transport. However on the point about public transport its best to check that service are still current. I also came across a Facebook Group called Pitch and Park which lists sites and stopping places near to towns and villages.

Try the searchforsites.co.uk web site putting in your selected town or city and it shows sites that should meet your criteria.

Melrose has excellent buses and of course a train station to Edinburgh within walking distance (well about 20 minutes) of the site or free parking there.

That's good source and another is UKCampsite.co.uk where it's search facility allows you to limit your search to campsites with public transport within one mile. There are many hundreds.

As no-one seems to have mentioned it Bromyard Downs has a bus stop directly outside to both Worcester & Hereford. However the bus service didn't allow dogs on the bus that last time we were there.

It's a good idea to check out local bus services before you go, a bus stop near a site doesn't always indicate a good bus service eg there's a bus service near the Plymouth Sound site in Devon but the service is very limited. There are a lot of on line sites including "find my bus." But local time tables and routes are generally easy to find. If you arrive on site without looking up the details the site information rooms usually have the timetables.
We've just stayed in S Devon, there are good bus services close to the Start Bay site, Steamer Quay and Hillhead.

That is a very good idea to check bus service frequencies, as in recent years subsidies from councils have been cut ,so companies have curtailed some services,
At Notgrove (Bourton on the Water) there used to be a reasonable service ,but it is now about three a day

Hillhead has bus stops right outside the site entrance buses run down to Kingswear then the ferry to Darmouth and the otherway to Brixham,Paignton etc you can always tell when a bus is due as loads of people head off site, but it is an expensive site

Google is always good for checking out bus stop locations and how many buses go from a stop. Just touch on the bus stop icon and it will bring up bus times, and often a link to the bus companies web site for time tables. It is however day / time specific, so if you are looking on a Sunday it may well say no buses are scheduled from this stop.
Baltic Wharf has a bus stop about 100 metres from the gate ( they have closed the one just outside) with frequent services into the centre. Just don't try and get on the A1, it's £8 for the 2 mile journey
and they don't take bus passes. The M2 is OK though. Apparently the A1 is the airport shuttle. We wondered why it seemed so reluctant to stop when we stuck out our hand.😂0 -
The good thing about Baltic Wharf is the circular tour bus near the site too, reduced price for CAMC members and a complete hop on and off tour of Bristol, a long route via the SS Gt Britain, the Downs, the Zoo, Clifton, even a Banksy and then the city centre, the castle etc. Just don't do it in the rain on the open top bit! And you can always get the water taxis too with a discount.
If you're not staying on the site the nearby car park at the SS Gt Britain is handy for all this if you get there early and want to see Bristol, especially the water front and M Shed Museum.

This is the Banksy nearest to Baltic Wharf. Girl with the pearl earring. Found behind the first basin as you walk toward the SS Great Britain. Its marked on google maps too.

You can walk most of the sights in Bristol if you are able to. We walked alongside the river to the Clifton S.Bridge then into Clifton itself, which was nice, then onto a few Museums and Galleries before descending to the indoor market and back via M sheds and SS G.B.
I realise we're a bit weird but it makes a pleasant walk.

What ever area you are thinking of visiting Google 'Traveline' to see the bus stops and where they are.
In addition you ask them for a bus route from the site to whatever your destination is, at whatever time you require and that web-site will give you the times and the maps
