Interesting info - any idea as to the % usage of pitches by the caravans and motorhomes ? Is that fairly equally split ?

Interesting indeed Jay. We know that folk join a caravan club for many reasons and not necessarily to use the clubs sites. I have no info other than that which JK posted but it does come as a surprise to me simply because of what I see on sites (not just club sites).
In February 2017 the daily express state that CC had reported that 40% of new members were motorhome users.

Call it Northumbria, ancient Kingdom, that will embrace everything North of the Humber, and add Durham as well.😁 It remains rather mysterious up here, especially to some Southerners and most journalists. As far as politicians are concerned, it barely exists at all, hence the none existent road links. However, it’s a firm favourite destination for those in the know with caravans and MHs. Does well at Olympic Sports as well. I think Yorkshire managed 12th place on medal table in 2012! It a bit of all reght for cycling fans as well.😂

I think the name change has certainly raised the profile of the Club amongst motorhomers. I belong to a Facebook page for my brand of motorhome which has over 3000 members. It is clear that a fair proportion are not members but start thinking about joining when others point out the site network and some of the other benefits. Those of us that start out with a caravan and then change to a motorhome will probably continue our membership but a lot of motorhomers come to the hobby with no previous ownership of other forms of camping. Having motorhome included in the name does encourage people to think about joining where as when it was just the Caravan Club some of those people would not have automatically thought that it was also a club for them?

Beat me to it David. I think prior to the name change motorhoming members stood at about 30 percent, so an increase of 19 percent over a couple of years. According to the NEC there are 225,000 registered motorhomes in the UK. It is probably slightly more due incorrect registration of details but that would indicate 172,000 of them are Club members?

yes indeed, and after all getting them is one thing but keeping them is another. As it has increased over two years (19%) a lot must have rejoined and I assume been very happy with the standard of sites and provision for motorhomes?

I think, for most, the CMC does, for both caravanners and motorhomers, what it says on the tin to borrow an advertising quote! There are still a lot of sites which need updating in terms of waste water disposal for motorhomes but this is work in progress and it is, at long last, becoming quite common to be surprised, when arriving on site that the upgrade has already happened!!!
I have just been making some bookings for a future trip using a mix of commercial, Club and one CL. Without doubt the CMC booking experience is the most seamless and straightforward. Of the three non club sites, one I had to pay a deposit with the balance due seven days before arrival. On another I had to leave credit card details, (I was almost more concerned about that than paying a deposit!) The third site I am awaiting a reply. So what many caravanners already know, motorhomers are learning that there is an advantage in belonging to the Club.

Having read most of this but not all i am intrigued by the on going matter of choice. Having had a caravan for forty odd years we are considering a motorhome. Thus far we have not been able to take the plunge for reasons of both health and finance.
Notwithstanding our delay, there is one point on which we are certain; that is the absolute necessity of spending £5k on automatic levelling. On our several wonderful tours of France we have often struggled with ramps and chocks in order to level the van. This experience, over many years, makes us realise that fiddling about trying to level a motorhome could be a nightmare. I know many people would say that hydraulics are a waste of £5k but we suspect, that for us, it would be the only way we could use a motorhome with comfort.
Is this view shared by others?

You don't have to spend 5K, got mine for 3K. 5K is for a fully automatic system. Mine still requires me to use a spirit level and press appropriate buttons to adjust the legs. It is the one thing I would now never be without. It certain cuts out the work and fiddle of using ramps as well as making what was unusable pitches now useable.

No, I don’t share your view with regard to levelling a MH, Q, unless you’re considering a behemoth, which I know you’re not. Actually, I don’t think you could be more wrong.
We rarely use our ramps and that applies both to our previous 6.4m van and the current 6m one. The shorter the van, the less you need to level it and a MH seems to take far less effort than a cvan in order to attain level.
For goodness sake, please don't spend that sort of money on a levelling system without using the van first.

I agree DD, being able to level at the touch of a button/s is something it is hard for those who have not tried it to appreciate. It is definitely worthwhile in my case and having had it, I would now find it difficult to live without it.

I think, PD, that both you and DD have MHs considerably longer than the AS of sub 6.5m that Q is considering.
I completely understand how a levelling system will benefit you both but, based on my own experience, Q will not need it on the shorter van.
