Diversion at Sutton Bank on the way to The Howard

Well, we made it to The Howard and very enjoyable it was too. Sutton Bank wasn't a problem, though I can see how it could be for a caravan. We were in a smallish queue which gradually got slower and slower, so as someone pointed out, if you have to stop with a caravan you might not get going again.
Coming home we got to the bottom of the Bank and an Artic with 40 ft trailer was reversing back along the way we were going. I wonder if he decided it wasn't going to work and he was looking for somewhere to turn? That was the only artic I saw heading for Sutton Bank.

I don't understand why caravans aren't allowed up Sutton bank either. Recently we took the road from Middlesbrough to Whitby with the van and the hill near Guisborough is just as steep and has hair pin bends but has no restrictions. Towed up no trouble.

Just wondered how we managed to get to high level campsites in the Harz Mountains (600mts), Bohemia (800 mts) etc., etc..

Just a memory, Our first motorhome was an old Autosleeper Talisman 1988, on a petrol Talbot ( i had rebuilt the rusted through cab). Quite by chance when touring Yorkshire I came upon Sutton Bank....oh no isnt that the one that caravans are banned on ?? look in mirror....police panda car right on my tail..now 'The Duchess' was NOT fast and changing gear was like stirring a rice pudding. But she DID get up there albeit at walking pace 4-5 mph. Yes the policeman WAS still there.Even the gearchange down to 1st went fairly well through the hairpin, got to the top....eventually. Quite expecting the Policeman to pull me over..but no, over the top on the straight, he quickly overtook me with a wave....phew! breathe in.
