Fridge problem

We bought a second hand caravan last year which has a Dometic RM6271L fridge. It worked ok but then became a bit intermittent on gas so we called the engineer. He came out and cleaned it all up and all seemed well. We went away in it again and the auto ignition kept clicking away, even though the fridge was still lit. We weren’t going away again so left the caravan under cover over winter and then had it serviced today ready for this season. The engineer discovered a soft grey cement like substance all around the workings of the fridge and he had no idea what it was. He condemned the fridge based on not knowing what it is and that it could heat up and give off noxious fumes. Does anyone have any idea what this stuff could be and how it got there?

you didn't say how old the caravan was when you bought it second hand last year. but if the service engineer has said it's dangerous and you have had problems before, I would get a new one and be safe.

You could try Dometic’s online support. Send an email from their website with the description of the problem and there is a good chance that they will get back to you, especially if it is a possible safety issue.

Yeah, it is a 2003 caravan so getting on a bit but it’s a mystery. Last summer it was fixed and clean and working fine. Now it has some weird stuff on it that two caravan engineers don’t recognise. I am looking for for a new one anyway. I’ll try Dometic and see what they say. Good suggestion.
