Too close

I’ve been a caravaner for over 30 years and when on a site always treat someone else’s pitch as their private space. I’ve noticed of late when pitched up many fellow campers walking so close to our caravan that they would need to be mindful of not tripping over my water barrel etc. This weekend we had one lady actually bang her leg on the hitch of our van. 

Surely it’s common decency to stay off someone else’s pitch to preserve their privacy? The lady in question here on the clubs Culloden Moor site passes so close to our van I could almost see all her wrinkles and spots.. It’s not much to expect a little bit of space.

    Of course the lady might have had a sight disability or a balance problem.

    I expect that you went out and discussed it with the offenders.

    I go out and tell the offenders that, as far as I'm aware, I've paid for exclusive use of the pitch and, unless they wish to share the cost of my pitch, would they kindly bog off and not come onto what I've paid exclusively for.  It usually works but then you get the exaggerated 'walking around the perimeter' people but hey that doesn't bother me.

    If you want to make the point, you could always place your chairs, tables, etc., etc., in a line across the front of your caravan so that they can't walk across you pitch.

    I'm not a lover of confrontation but neither do I shy away from it. I would have no trouble going out and speaking to anyone who gets too close to my van. Don't take a shortcut over my pitch, simples!

    Not much chance of our nearest neighbour encroaching as he's at least 100 yards away. Use CLs, a friendlier experience.laughing (Unless you do want to have a chat).smile

    Often the problem is made worse by where you decide to pitch. It is worth thinking about this when selecting a pitch. If you are en route to the toilet block or the service point you are likely to get more people crossing your pitch. People will always take the shortest route between A and B. In some cases it is the Clubs fault by not looking more closely at the ergonomics of their sites.

    We've only got annoyed with it on one stay which was at Clumber where the perimeter fencing was non existent and people tended to exit into the woods by the nearest route … our pitch. Can't say we did much about it as it happened a lot and I don't do Nora Batty on holiday. But I would if it really got out of hand. wink

     David, hence the problem they had to resolve at Southport following the extension.

    It can happen on CLs too, unfortunately. On one near Cromer there was about 1 mtr between our back window and the hedge behind, but still the chap from van next to us would cross behind the van, as it was the shortest distance to the waste bins!! yell

    I do think that some people are a bit too protective of 'their' pitch. Some sites are laid out such that walking over the grass 'fingers' is the only way to get to certain parts eg bins or water&/or grey water and some people seem to think that the grass bit is 'their's too. I've only been to St Margarets at Chirk during winter when the grass pitches are out of use, but when they are in use, I'd imagine it'd be almost impossible to NOT walk close to or between some of the grass pitches when walking through the wooded bit to some of the pitches on the perimeter.

    I don't have an issue if they stick to the grass fingers. However, walking under the pull out awning is somewhat rude.

    We went away at Easter and were on a service pitch.  Because we didn’t have an awning up, and because the room to park on the offside was a bit tight with the Aquaroll in place, we parked on the nearside of our van.  The EHU and tap were on the offside, and the grey water drain to the rear.  I don’t particularly have a problem with people walking across the grass between pitches, however it seemed fair game for children and adults to walk and cycle across the edge of our pitch on the offside, running over our Aquaroll mains pipe and electric cable to get to the footpath that ran a few feet behind the pitch.  The connector from our hose to the tap is a bit dodgy, and I managed to get a secure connection, but I was constantly checking it hadn’t been dislodged, resulting in water running straight down the drain. I wouldn’t have minded so much if they’d cut through the nearside, as there were no services that side for us or our neighbour.  A couple of times I was going to ask people not to do it, but they were always too quick.  It wasn’t worth telling the wardens because we were only there three nights and, I guess, it just depends on the other site users at the time.  If someone had actually caused the hose to disconnect, it would have been different.

    Gerry - The site rules are as follows:

    13. Site roads
    a. Please drive your vehicle with particular consideration for pedestrians, including children and other vulnerable road users, who have priority over vehicles on our sites' roads. You must have a full current driving licence, insurance for the vehicle driven and follow the principles of road safety. Cars and motorhomes must have a valid road fund licence. Vehicle speeds should not exceed walking pace (5mph) and one way systems should be followed at all times. Please remember that other members' pitches are strictly "no-go" areas.

    Or is that just for vehicles? Perhaps someone could report this post to get clarification from a Moderator?

     

    Furthermore, I think the Club are in breach of their own Bye-Laws:  Code of Behaviour, 10.2 states:

    10.2 Members shall undertake to comply with Club Site Rules, The Caravan Code and The Towing Code. The Club Site Rules will also be displayed at each Club Site and on the Club’s website.

    I reported this over 12 months ago and I still cannot see them on here - Yes, I know how to find them - but that is not the point.

    As it’s in rule 13 which is about site roads and driving on site, it clearly refers to vehicles, to my mind.

    To publish a rule banning people from setting foot on another’s pitch would be draconian. Sometimes it’s necessary to walk on another pitch to reach the EHU bollard, for instance.

    Tinners...I don't disagree with you. However, some may have read this and interpret it differently. 

    The question posed by the OP still remains and as a member of the club for more years than I care to remember, I too would agree that it's common decency not to walk on others' pitch. Plugging into a bollard is acceptable, indeed, an opportunity to get to know, or introduce yourself your neighbour, should you wish to do so.

    I agree there are a few sites in the uk and other places that make for a closed in feeling,but then as it seems we are becoming more unsociable by the generation it could become more popularsurprised

    For those that don’t know Marazion Club Site, this presents another interesting conundrum. It actually has a public footpath running clean through the site. It’s a stone stiled gap in the back paddock hedge, around pitches 44/45 on current map, down out of entrance to paddock area, across site road, through, round pitches 10, 9 and 19, then out other side of site by pitch 23 onto public road and on down into woodland around site. The look on members faces when our three Airedale’s, (all on leads) was priceless when we walked this footpath some mornings with our pooches from nearby CL. 😁

    Its not marked on the site map, nor is there any mention of it on site leaflet.

    You are suggesting the 'club' looks more closely at the ergonomics of their sites....WOW !!!..that would be a first..

    We get fed up when people walk across our pitch so when possible pitch with the back to a fence or hedge. We are not unfriendly and happily chat to our neighbours but walking across a pitch is simply rude,

    Love it when someone stops for a chat and lets their dog wee up guy rope , and they get offended when i moan ! Also when its dark doggies let out for last wee ( i hope } better go ime of on one !!
