Charges on CL

We have a motorhome and this time we have a car with us.  Some CLs are charging us for an extra car.  We’ve paid without a fuss but somehow it doesn’t seem right.  Is there any real difference to a caravan and a car?  There is still just the two of us using exactly the same amount of water, EHU etc.  Where does the extra cost come in?

We are Elms Farm near Cheltenham in the Cotswolds.  Our CL pitch fee is fully inclusive so you wouldn't pay any extra with us and being a farm we have ample room for extra parking.

Not trying to be funny but wouldn't your question be better directed to the CL in question rather than posting it on here.  Our members aren't in any position to answer?

Whilst, as a caravanner, I haven't come across this,  I guess individual CL owners can set charges as they feel.  Maybe they are aligning themselves with the club's charging policy? Either way, maybe best to check with owners in advance.

CL, I thought, surely not but I see a welcome on your return is due. Good thinking, DD. You know it makes sense👍🏻

Regarding charging for a car, it’s not logical but entirely up to the CL owner how he/she organises the pricing. There’s little to be gained in discussing it here.

We did, of course, query this extra charge with the CL.  Their reply was “it’s different for motorhomes”.  And, yes it’s entirely up to them so we did not make a fuss.

My reason for posting on here was to get some views from other users. This is a discussion forum and I was stimulating a discussion.  We have already benefited from this thread, as we have asked the next CL whether they charge for a car with a motorhome.  They don’t.

It does seem a trifle inconsistent although, as has been pointed out, the CL owner is free to set his own tariff. This should be good for a 'them' and 'us' debate on the equity of such "diskriminashun". wink

I have come across this in the past and after some discussion with the owners they have waved the charge. If they hadn't I would have left. I thought most owners would have by now seen sense as it is now quite common for motorhomes to tow cars. I suppose you could have always offered to tow your motorhome on site with the car and ask them would they then charge!

IMHO "it's different for motorhomes" doesn't really explain the extra charge.  WHY is it different for motorhomes?  Car+caravan, or car+motorhome take up similar space, in fact, some car+caravans can be longer, than a MH towing a, usually smallish, car.

But as you say, it's their CL, so they can charge what and how they like.  But I'd have thought it would be to their detriment eventually, we don't tow a car, but if we did, I certainly wouldn't go to that CL, and I'm not alone.

Goes to show, that you really need to check pricing before committing to a firm booking.  BTW, did it not mention this extra charge on the website?  I assume not from what you said in the OP.

How about just parking the extra car outside the CL's gate/fence on the main road? 🙄

We considered that but there isn’t anywhere to park. We are up a narrow lane!

Anyway, we will ask in future and give the CL a miss if there’s an extra charge.  Thanks for the useful comments in this “discussion”. 🤔

Their website does say there is a charge for an extra car but we don’t see our car as extra.  We were surprised to be asked for more money bringing the cost of our stay to £20 a night!

On the other hand, we were on a CL last week and another family arrived in their car and parked next to a caravan.  Out came a super sized awning for the extras to sleep in!  This then made four adults and five children on one pitch.  I have no idea whether they paid extra but I imagined this scenario is what is meant by “extra car” rather than one car + motorhome or one car + caravan.

Thanks for clarifying that.  But like you, I'd have assumed that "extra car" would mean having 2 cars with a caravan, rather than just one.  IMHO towing a car behind a MH isn't an "extra car", you're only towing 1 car, not 2!

It would be better for the CL concerned to clarify that, as well as a charge for an extra car, there is a charge for a car being towed by a MH.

But as I said in my earlier post, this has served as a reminder to double-check charges, especially those which, as in this case, appear to be clear, but could be interpreted differently.

Sorry, completely forgot about my earlier post on this. I was thinking of the charge for a second car with a van, admittedly not sure if that's the same for a car with a MH.

Welcome back to the fold, by the way, DD. So many good sites to choose from again now! wink

We haven’t yet come across it on a CL, although we do occasionally see a charge for an extra car. It’s quite common on private sites, although I do have to agree regarding whether a car and motorhome combo actually constitutes an extra vehicle. Maybe if it was on a towed transporter, that might merit an extra charge. (We are off to a CL on Friday, and will be taking our Jeep with us, but no charge.) There are plenty of CLs, so the fact that it would be £2 extra per night would put us off using it. If it’s on the website, I wouldn’t argue, but if it wasn’t and we were charged, I would be “discussing” it.
