i am looking to travel to the Lake District in August from South Wales i am looking for somewhere for a rest stop on the way
also a good site with a village within walking distance

Are you looking at a specific area? The Lake District is massive and different parts offer different things. We're off to Bolton Hall CL next weekend, which is within walking distance of both Gosforth and Santon Bridge villages. We are planning to do Scafell Pike so this site is a perfect location for us. The South Western Lakes are less busy than places near Keswick, Windermere and Ambleside and we like the solitude but it depends what you're after?
We also love the market town of Penrith and there are several sites (club, commercial and CL) which give good access to it. I think Thacka Lea commercial site (never stayed myself) is just on the outskirts. Try searching by map on "UK Campsite" website: you can create your own virtual brochure to save sites for future reference.
Sorry can't help with the rest stop but someone on here will know somewhere!

Which route you going to use? Are you happy on a CL or just a Club Site? Will help to pinpoint a stopover for you.😊

Bit confused. Do you want the village within walking distance for your stopover or for the Lakes? How long do you want for your stopover? 1 night or a few? Do you want to do Hillwalking or just sightseeing? Happy with a C.L. or want a Club site.? Any preference regarding Adult only site or do you have children?

Are you looking for a stopover somewhere midway between Wales and the Lake District and then a different site somewhere in the Lake District within a village and close to a pub?

I've said it before and I'll say it again (
), if you're looking for a CL maybe en route to the lakes you'd do a lot worse than Drake House Farm near Clitheroe - we use it when travelling from Wiltshire - but beware, you'll probably want to stay there longer and spend less time at your final destination! 
As for a site in the Lake District itself, are you a member of C&CC? They've just acquired the Scotgate site at Braithwaite - good for the northern lakes and at least two excellent pubs in the village.

That's a great place for those that want to walk the hills directly from the site. The C&CC certainly have a near monopoly on sites round Keswick.

There are plenty of service areas on the motorways suitable for a coffee break. You can see them on a map then take your pick.👍🏻

If you're going to try a CAMC site Coniston is probably the best one for a walk to a village which has pubs and shops. August will be busy but Coniston has a lot to offer, it's just a short walk down to the lake and also the village. Worth a look.
The services up the M5/6 will also be busy in August, we tend to use Stafford N & S, the caravan N bit is away from the lorries but unfortunately if you arrive around lunch time it will be full of lorries as they don't have enough parking spaces. The caravan S area tends to have white vans too but not quite as bad. Think you'll have to take pot luck on rest stops.
Enjoy the Lakes, we visit a lot, in all weathers and it's one of our favourite places.

The C&CC site at Keswick will fit your remit, if you are a member. Right on the edge of town, near the bus terminus, near the ferry for Derwentwater. Perfect for your needs. If you only want CAMC site then Brue's suggestion of Coniston is best suited.

I'd give Keswick a miss personally at that time of year.
Thinking back to alternatives for the southern lakes, several (and I mean very many!) years ago, in our camping days we stayed at a site called Limefitt Park at Troutbeck near Windermere (not Troutbeck Head). You could do a different walk direct from the site each day for a week at least and there are two good pubs in the village - the Queens Head and the Mortal Man. But I've no idea what the site is like these days.
Another alternative for the southern lakes would be The Croft at Hawkshead where you'd be even more spoilt for choice of walks and pubs!

Its a fair walk - easier downhill but more of a struggle back uphill from either of the Castlerigg camp sites near Keswick.
Much prefer the Keswick area as there is a lot going on...with of course the associated crowds but you're not going to avoid those in August.

At least the lakes have very good bus services. If staying at Coniston there are buses through to Ambleside or Hawkshead (where you can catch the mini bus to Near Sawrey and see Beatrix Potter's old farmhouse) and then on to Windermere for the ferry to Bowness. It's also a nice walk from there to the ferry.

Ullswater is lovely and Gillside Farm at Glenridding is at the heart of things. Access is from M6 to Penrith.

Last time I was at Castlerigg, I was under canvas. Good cardio-vascular workout if you walk back from the town.
