Black Knowl walking into Brockenhurst village

Hi,

As anyone who as stopped at Black Knowl site know if there is any walks into village ,other than the way you come in. Thought there might be shortcuts through woods as we don't plan on going out in car. 

Our elderly dog as just had operation and thinking the 2 mile into village will be a bit much for her.

Any suggestions ?

    I think in the site information room they give details of a path which takes you most of the way into Brockenhurst.. When you are on the early approaches to the site you can see the gravelled path going off to the right. If you look on Google Earth you can see the path. Don't think it any shorter but it will be traffic free.

    A yes there is it is about 2miles , when coming on national park access road (take care as potholes are again a problem and speed humps) as you take last right hand turn onto cc access road (good surface) the gravel road (no vehicles) on the left will take you via a right hand corner about 400yards  on to Brockenhurst all open ground (no shadesurprised)

    Ps if you turn right out of the site (on foot only)it cuts a corner off by crossing the open grass land but can be very boggy in places, and as it is nesting time now the park are asking you to keep to gravel paths

    I vaguely remember a large field to the left of the site? Maybe there is a right of way?

    The alternative route for walking to Brockenhurst is a right turn out of the site entrance, keep walking, keeping the wood etc on your right across the open spaces and you'll come to a footpath, take a right turn towards the village (near the Lyndhurst Road.) If you don't fancy negotiating ponies and cattle take the path down towards the Ober water ford, (again right, as you leave the site,) stick to the paths and bear right by before the Oberwater bridge, the path follows the edge of the common land. These walks are medium length.

    Another access route is straight out of the road leading to the site, cross over Rhinefield road and take the path in front of the cottages, keeping them to your left and follow the paths signs towards the village. None of these walks are strenuous but they're a bit more than a stroll.

    But the quickest route is back to Rhinefield Rd, turn left and head towards the village via the watersplash, just under half an hour of easy walking.

    To the OP, is your dog the size that might fit into a dog buggy? Our buggy has been a life saver for our old terrier and ourselves. we've tackled lots of walks, even on uneven terrain.

    Download some walking maps for the New Forest, the walks from Brockenhurst are excellent.

    thanks for the info will try and find the maps online.

    30min should walk should be ok as she still wants her walks but often overdoes it. She is a bit for a dog buggy but like the idea of them .

    Lexi. If you take the shortest route, left out onto Rhinefield Rd and cross over to the path along Rhinefield (from the start of the  main drive down to the site) you'll pass the dog friendly Forest Park Hotel. The footpath goes past the hotel entrance, handy if you want a drink or a meal en route and there are other dog friendly eateries in Brockenhurst. Have a lovely stay, it's a beautiful area. smile

    (I use the larger OS maps for the NForest but the there are plenty of tourist maps on line too.)

    Just note the large signs advising to keep to main footpaths if you are coming during the nesting season,  especially If with a dog who likes to forage

    , This last couple of weeks Rhinfield road has been busy with it seems drivers with no sense of the animals that could be round the next blind cornersurprised

    Ps have just done The village by car it is just over 2 miles and not very pedestrian friendly in places in Rhinefield road dodging vehicles where there is not a footpath and the poniessurprised

    There is a footpath on Rhinefield, it goes through the roadside trees in places, you need to be on the right hand side approaching the village. smile
