Sat navs
Hi All. We're looking to buy a new sat nav sometime soon. Can anyone recommend a sat nav that keeps you out of trouble please? We currently have a Garmin LT760 but it has let us down several times despite the motorhome dimensions being stored. The C&M Club recommend the Avtex Tourer One - anyone used this & has any feedback please? Thanks in advance.

I think you’ll find it's basically the same sat nav with club apps added.
We have the Avtex version as it was supplied with our van but I’m not sure I'd buy it at the price they ask.
We've had Garmin sat navs for many years and I can’t say we've been let down by them. Do you have it set to use major routes and have you input your dimensions slightly oversize? That should give you a safety margin.

how can a satnav compare the size of a vehicle to a road that hasn't been 'measured' and documented?
some roads have been 'measured' and have Width Limit signs.
a satnav will know of these and keep you away from them if unsuitable.
bit many, many roads and lanes are not documented as such and are therefore 'fair game' in the routing process.
as TW say, the best way to keep on wider roads is to have the overall planning parameter as 'fastest route' NOT 'shortest route' which will take you down a lane just to save a few yards.

If you just program the destination and follow it blindly, it is very likely you will end up with problems, whatever parameters you have set. As mentioned above I have it set as fastest, use motorways etc. However, I always check through the route it has selected and examine any suspicious bits on street view, inserting waypoints if required to move it away from its selected course. Plus check it is taking me to the site by the approved route, not the back way using a farm track. If a track has been incorrectly input as a road, the system will use it. The onus is on the user to check.
A bit back we were going to Ashford and the sat nav kept wanting to take me through London. I eventually realised I had turned off use toll roads, as it kept directing me onto the M6 toll when we were travelling in that area. The Dartford crossing is of course a toll. It pays to check.😀
