Notre Dame Cathedral Fire
Just watching the awful scenes from Paris of he devastating fire at Notre Dame Cathedral. Such a beautiful building. 850 years of history destroyed in less than 2 hours. That gorgeous rose window gone. So sad. Although it has been some time now since we went to Paris, it was always on my visit list whenever we were there..

Agree PM, an utter tragedy, irreplaceable.

But fortunately no loss of life has been reported as far as I know. Things can be recreated and I am sure it will be rebuilt for us all to admire in the future.

He was probably smoking in bed.
We did a city break a few years back, the first time my OH had been to Paris, but Notre Dame was one place we didn't manage to fit in. Days of your trip can get swallowed up once you go into the Louvre.
It's disconcerting the number of old buildings that catch fire during renovations. It's happened to a few NT properties as well. More attention needs to be given to fire safety when working on these old buildings.

Very sad only saw it from the other side of the Seine many years ago.
It was shown on all the french news channels last night and it was the main news for about two and half hours, they were trying to save the stone structure from collapsing but all the medieval woodwork has gone in the main part of the cathedral and we were amazed how the scaffolding stayed up OH said with all the heat it would have buckled.

Sounds as though the fire is now out, very sad but I think they managed to remove a lot of treasures but it's the structure and the windows which are the real treasure. I went years ago when I was 18 and can remember the atmosphere with everyone standing, no seats as in the medieval style, the weak to the wall, the rest had to stand.

Agree brue. Anyone who has been in an original medieval building, and one restored at a much later date can see the difference, no matter how painstakingly that restoration has been. Much of France’s history is linked with Notre Dame, rather like ours is with Westminster Abbey. 😢

I went many years ago. So very upsetting to see such loss and destruction.

Not so sure about that. After seeing photos of St Malo and SainteMare-Eglise (just to name two places), it is amazing how well they have been restored to appear as in their original state. After being the theatre for two wold wars, I think the French have shown tremendous abilities of restoration.

Notre Dame could and should be put back exactly as it was ( with the exception of a sprinkler system) but I fear it won’t be. I read that he (Macron) being the globalist he is, wants to build it back with a view to ‘diversity ‘ and the architect is suggesting an Islamic minaret!! Words fail me!

Have you been reading the Daily Star or National Enquirer again, Merve?

Remember that the wooden roof and the spire are/were not original. They were added but a few hundred years ago - and probably offended the purists of the time as places of worship like that just did not have spires.

Reading in today's Times, the MP's are getting twitchy about the Palace of Westminster as one that's waiting to happen.
