I am insured with Aviva fully comp, and did my due diligence by asking the right questions, or so I thought!

Like are there any restrictions on towing? gave me all of the  spiel about licence categories and their towing weights etc,

It was only when pressed did they answer my question regarding any restrictions on the length of the caravan.

Policy states: it covers any trailer whilst its being towed by your vehicle for third party damage to property or people. So thats ok ----But over the phone 2 days ago they said that there is a 7 meter maximum body length, nothing about the draw bar length!

But the Motoring in Europe aditional cover which you pay for stipulates: The vehicle identified on your motor vehicle policy and any caravan or trailer which does not exceed a length including the tow bar of 7 meters, a height of 3 meters and a width of 2.25 meters

When I took the policy out they informed me that it was all the same just an extension for Europe(MIRROR POLICY) The policy information is online for all to see.

Its clearley not, so im covered in the UK But have to slice 1/2 meter off when I;m on the ferry going over to France or Ireland!!

Advised them that they have mis sold me the insurance offered me £30-00 what use is that to me if I cant take the caravan across the water?

Have raised a formal complaint with them and will have to find another insurer with better clarity!

So beware when taking out any insurance read all documents till you are clear that you have the cover you want/need and question anything you dont understand and if need be get confirmation in writing.

By the way hanging bikes on carriers on the back of the caravan/ motorhome increases its length and you may not be covered.

I wish things were simple!

Tony

Not AVIVA, but a similar problem.

My vehicle is a four door 4x4 pickup. It’s classed as a commercial vehicle by the insurance world, even though I’m retired and it’s never been used as such in its life.

Getting insurance cover wasn’t a straight forward job. Has to be insured through a commercial policy. It’s use is social use only, fully comprehensive. Named driver only and driving of other vehicles not allowed. Under 60 and clean driving license.  That’s the easy part. Informing them of a tow bar - not a problem, as commercial vehicles tow trailers and this is covered. On checking that towing a caravan is allowed, now the fun starts. I’ve had to go through a specialist broker to find a company that would allow a caravan to be towed. Caravan has its own insurance so I’m not looking for the pickups insurance to cover any damage the towed caravan might cause. It’s just to ensure that my pickups insurance policy isn’t voided should a accident happens.

That sounds Crazy especially as 4x4 pickups are now so popular as Towcars ( towcar of the year by CMC).

Do the manufacturers of 4x4 Pickups realise that insurers are wary of them ?

Thanks for that i'll be on the phone first thing tomorrow as like you my van is not covered abroad by Aviva, but as we take out Red Pennant insurance it should be ok.

Will be looking for a refund for the caravan part of the extension as was told all would be covered as UK.

Last year I changed my vehicle for a VW Caravelle, which comes as a 7-seater.  When exploring insurers, I found that they had different ideas of what type of vehicle it is.  From Recreational Vehicle (RV) through MPV, Estate Car, Bus and Commercial Vehicle.    The V5 describes it as: Body type - Van/Side Windows  Taxation class - Diesel car.         My insurance policy simply describes it as a Volkswagen - Caravelle SE TDI BMT, which is the make and model on the V5.

When asked to give my own description, I said it had the same seating capacity as a VW Sharan MPV (older type) but was slightly larger.
