Thankfully none of this will occur during what is left of my time on this planet!man has been lighting fires,breeding cattle etc for many more years than I can remember and you wish to replace these items with what exactly?Pollen is bad for the lungs and tubes,so no more trees and plants!etc.etc.So where does this ideology take the world?

As they don't fly along our streets at road level, though the ULEZ I suspect their effect on the pollution levels being addressed by this restriction is minimal.
On a wider pollution picture than Central London's street pollution, things might be very different.

Mercifully it already is occurring!
Every 'journey' starts with a first step. Thankfully those first steps towards cleaner air started years ago, before and well within our lifetimes. As a result we now see, larger strides made in that concerted effort to lessen the effects of our pollution on the environment in general but particularly in our cities and towns. It's happening across Europe and also Planet wide.
This process was started by the efforts of our Victorian forebears who identified those horrendous problems we were causing in our cities. Later, and just in my lifetime, I remember as a child standing with my mother at the bus station in Sheffield, the air we breathed at roadside was truly dreadful. Then came the 1956 Clean Air Act which really paved the way to what we see today and the initiatives we now discuss. Still some way to go but we are up and almost running thanks to the responsibility we are showing in continuing this clean up. Yesterday I stood at the bus stop with my grandson, what a pleasant experience that was compared to sixty years ago and due to our generations efforts it will get better still..

I find that web site very complicated and rather confusing, much as I do with the new London system. It does seem to work however, because I no longer have any desire to visit either London or Europe, due to the fear of falling foul of these constantly changing regulations, areas where you can't go at all or need some sort of sticker or face a fine etc.. Its easier just to stay well away ..

Sensible yes, less controversial probably not! The difference with most European schemes is that they ban vehicles that don't meet certain standards. If the real aim is to eliminate those vehicles that produce the most pollution that is the sensible way forward. In this country we tend to use pricing as a means of discouragement which basically means the less able suffer far more than those able to pay. Does pricing solve the problem, probably not. Another issue is that we are not very good at doing things at a national level in the UK, it is left up to individual towns and cities so you end up with a hotchpotch of schemes and you don't even have a common payment system. Had we started along the German Umwelt system all those years ago people would have been aware that they must prepare for the future in stages.

This makes a mockery of the who thing in my opinion. everyone else, including the emergency services, has to comply but an archaic, over priced taxi system, London Black cabs, are exempt from both the congestion and ULEZ charges

They are currently subject to a 15-year age limit - we are consulting on a proposal to reduce this to 12 years - and new emissions standards have already been introduced for them. Yes I have seen them but they are quite a rarity,, meanwhile existing ones will be allowed to continue for another 12-15 years.
This was not an option with the buses which had to become cleaner a long time ago. London buses are run on a 5 year contract basis, the operators of the contract could /can not tender for the work unless the vehicle profile set out in the contract is not met. It seems the Black cab fraternity have some sort of hold over the mayor and he doesn't want to rock the boat or upset them.
There are currently something like 21,000 Black cabs in London at present.

We also should take a leaf out of the laws in Maderia regarding taxis cabs. For only fossil fuel versions they are not allowed to be left on idle. The cab drivers once on the taxi rank or at their desination are required to turn the engines off. Then they have to push their cabs up the rank queue. It works! The all electric or hybrids can however be moved using their alternative energy source. Don't know if mainland Portugal is the same mind, it, along with us, should be in my opinion.

I think we may have a few electric taxis in MK but the majority seem to be Toyota hybrids. We also have one bus route in MK that operates electric buses. It happens to be the route that runs at the bottom of our road so the one we use. They seem to have been successfully in place for some years now but interestingly the use of electric buses has not been extended to other routes. This might be governed by the charging points (set in the road at two points on the route) as new ones would have to be installed depending on route. MK seems to get quite a few grants to experiment with various new technologies so perhaps we are a test bed?

I'm going to Abbey Woods over Easter Once this comes in I won't be going again, how will this affect the newly refurbished site?
How many folk will stop away?
Will this be the death of Abbey Woods?
I'm not paying £100 day to visit the ULEZ zones....

I don't think Abbey Wood will be affected ? Is it inside the south circular, doesn't look like it on the map. Crystal Palace will, but that's on borrowed time anyway

is from way back in 2015, and it's got worse since then, so while we're all liable to mutter when it hurts us, the measures are desperately needed.
Idling's a big part of it, as has been mentioned, too. It always alarms me how people collecting the children from the school near us sit with their engines running for anything up to 3/4 hr, mainly so they can keep using their phones, then their kids walk into the fog their parents have created for them. When the school campaigns to stop this, they just get loads of abuse.

I am so glad that 20 years ago I moved away from the SE to West Wales, the air is pure ( extensive lichen growth on anything that doesnt move regularly proves that) So the restrictions mean i cannot travel into polluted Cities......GOOD. I dont want to anyway.But I do still want to travel about to Tour in our motorhome. It is a 'euro 5' and we cannot afford a newer one. Just hope that our 'freedom to tour' lasts as long as my driving ability before I turn my toes up !

Well the RV came back as okay to take in to London despite the size of the 6.8lt V10 engine
I had to send off copies of the V5c and documents to prove it had been converted to LPG as I did for the french Crit'Air vignettes, this makes it okay to drive though London and puts me in the low group 1 for Paris which I applied for last year..

So could this see a revival of LPG retro fitted to petrol engine cars in the future as the conversion kit is cheaper than getting a new car

I live in Bath, about to impose a Clean Air Zone.
The local council have now decided to exempt cars, due to huge public pressure.
Its not clear though what happens to all the VW Transporters and the like that are actually used as cars, purely for people moving. Is a VW Caddy with rear seats a van or a car?
A Citroen C15 camper, is it a van or a car?

I think it might depend on how the base vehicle is classified for VED purposes? Many might well be classed as cars. The problem might occur if they are classed a private goods vehicles. It might be an idea to contact your local Councillor to make sure there is an understanding of the issues.
