We’ve been lucky this year we are £60 cheaper than last and £120 lower than renewal quote. Lots of shopping around finally got us that price with Aviva (most comparison sites don’t cover Aviva or direct line so worth checking them separately)

    it pays to shop around.

Yes, have tried both Aviva and Direct line, 4 comparison websites, and several other companies.

Ah well, just an idea. Quite a few similar sales groups have financial services.

You never know why or how these companies charge what they do. They follow their 'guidelines' and then change the following year.

I was told by one company that it was cheaper to insure for more miles per year - the average 10 - 15,000 per year even if you didn't drive that mileage as by going for a much lower milage says to them you have less experience and thus more likely to have an accident. You then speak to others and they say the less miles on the road the cheaper you pay as you're less likely to have a bump.

Smoke and mirrors.......shop around, cross your fingers and hope for the best!!

Well, OH has had the "conversation" with our current insurer, they are not budging, but of course they (Halifax) are only brokers.

She asked them for a quote for 8000 miles instead of our present 10000, just to see if going a lower was a bad idea, but the quote was £35  less, so 8000 does not seem a factor.

The very nice lady she spoke with also professed to be shocked by the increase, but could offer no explanation.

Not only has the premium gone up almost 100%, the excess has gone from £100 to £350.

They, AXA, obviously do not want our business!

Policy will not be auto renewed now, so that is sorted.

OK, so have found the price for 2017/2018, that was when we had to change insurer, and the first full year of owning the VW.

Our best quote, which we took, was through Halifax, so we have been with them for 2 years now.

In 2017/2018 we were insured for 10000 miles, just me and OH, the premium was £458.51.  When it came to renewal in 2018 I have a vague memory that they wanted a bit more, but nothing horrendous.

We also decided to put our daughter in the policy, so shopped around for quotes on that basis. The best quote, from a source we had actually heard of, was from Bank of Scotland, who of course are really the same people as Halifax.  The quote was also a bit less than our renewal without DD.

So OH went back to Halifax and asked for a quote to include DD, which was a little less than that from BOS, so we stayed with Halifax.  We paid £417.57

So there you have it, makes very little sense!

OH has had to admit defeat after much shopping around, we will be paying £637 rather than the £417 of this year, but at least we have saved a good bit on the proposed renewal premium.

The best quote in the end was from NFU, so we have gone with this.

Thank goodness that is it sorted for another year!

We used to insure the X-Trail for 7,000 miles a year. about 3 years ago I changed it to 10,000 as it reduced the cost by £30. Go figure!

Just had Direct Line renewal quote. Its £11 more than last year ( despite last year being first with discount)> Quote is better than any on Comparison sites. Saga were the cheapest on Comparison sites on a like for like basis.( Left them last year for Direct Line so it seems they are really against loyalty)

Quote update.- Just had renewal quote from Direct Line.My Jimny, Fully comp in 2019 was£216-16.Very competitive.New quote is £252. Comparison like for like quotes gave SAGA £198,.M & S £206. Phoned Direct Line and in less than 15 mins, including the hanging on,they requoted at £189-28.  A reduction of £60. Quite extraordinary and still shows they will con you if you dont querry your first offer.

Our renewal this month , with NFU was about £30 less than we paid last year, so after checking out quotes elsewhere, we have stayed with them.

We could have saved about £30 with a different insurer, but the excess was much higher, so we decided to stick with what we have.

When I had my VW Touran, for the last two years I had it insured through the CAMC.  The last premium was around £600.  Then I changed it for a VW Caravelle, and paid a small extra amount for the remaining 4 months.  When the next 12 months premium arrived, it was for an eye-watering £1,700.  Straight onto the comparison website, of course, and I got comparable cover from Admiral for just under £800.

I was with CES for over 20 years before I learned my lesson to shop around.  That came about when I was smacked in the rear by a hit-and-run driver in a stolen car in 2009, when my Touran was less than 2 months old.  It was unblemished after the repairs and I got all my costs back because it was a no-fault claim.  But CES whacked my next premium up by £90.

One agent on a comparison website told me there was no such thing as loyalty in business, and to always check around for the best deal.  Sensible advice which I immediately took on board!
