Journey Trackers

as a student back in the 60's I'd send the family a postcard every three weeks or so from some far flung place in the world
And did you swap homeward bound postcards with other travellers for them to post from some place you never actually travelled to yourself, just to keep them on their toes?

The tracker that we had to have installed in our MH to get insurance at a sensible price, has an App that records every time it moves and plots it on a map, with dates / times. It even charted our journey round the site to dump and refill tanks.😀

yes that was it, got the software some where, now the OS maps come with a free download so tend to use those.

Hi peedee, cant believe its over two years since you started this thread!
Anyway, since then we have been using a couple of apps and stopped using others.
The Moves app was discontinued and Milecatcher just stopped working so looked at others.
First we used was Polarsteps which I still use but wanted someting that would show me a daily record as well as doing 'trips'. I have tried Arc but it seems very temperamental with lots of data gaps and constant messages requesting that you contribute to support the site.
Whilst with our MH freinds the day before flying off on holiday last month he showed me Esplorio. I down loaded the app and found it very very good for our trip but also, that as well as defining trips, it has a diary function that is always 'on' so it does both things that I want.
I have also looked at keeping a Blog and got advice on this from DK, after looking at his Caravan Travels site. I have the Day One app on my ipad, and it looks like it may be useful, but need to give it a good try and my aim was to use the info from the tracker type apps to help with a Blog but now wondering if the app will be adequate for me as I have no intention of publishing anything.

Peedee, I missed this post last time round. I have just picked up on it now.
Sounds great. Have just downloaded the App onto my phone but that's as far as I got. I went to register by the email method. Name, email and password required but keyboard covers the password box so can only enter name and email. I've kept trying and eventually typed in a password blind (couldn't see the box) this worked but then got stuck on my home town, which it didn't recognise, I found this odd given what type of App it is. However it recognised Nottingham so that's ok.
It was all a bit frustrating but I got there in the end.
Just waiting to try it out now. That should be fun

PD I too missed your initial posts and have just looked at the App and it looks promising for what we want to record some of our trips. Is it possible to view your journals if so how? I’ve clicked on your links of trips but it just goes to my app front page

There are privacy setting on each trip you create. For each trip you create, there are three privacy settings, "Only me","Followers",(limits who can see them) and "Everyone" You authorise your followers. You can also share a secret link with indviduals/parties e.g. Club Together.
Here are a couple of links to two of my trips made last year. Click on these.
Outward to Spain's Costa Blanca
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the information and links.
As a result I have just downloaded the App to my iPhone to test.
At least my family will know where I am when I next get lost.

It's been interesting to re-visit this thread again. Just a thought. Something came up on my phone the other day to do with Google maps. It was possible for be to trace back my journeys for any day since I'd had my current phone. It told me when I'd left home, where I was going to, how long I was in the car. I soon began to realise how often I did actually go out to our local Co-op, almost at 'close of play', presumably to get a 'treat' of some sort. It would have been interesting to see what I bought.... was it one of their large apple pies and tub of clotted cream; a couple of bottles of Pepsi Max for Carol; a tub of Cookie Dough Ice cream or a bottle of wine...... I wonder how many times I went for the wine!!!! 😀😀

Charge the battery!

Tried it for my journey to North Norfolk and left it ‘live’ for about 6 hours and in that time it used about 73% of my battery power, any tips to rectify that.
Plug the phone into your car's cigarette lighter socket whilst travelling (with the appropriate charger/plug) or if possible into the USB socket if your car has one.

Has anyone considered that it may be easy for others, not friends and family, to track you and knowing you are in Spain break into your house? Just a thought!
