KjellNN puts emphasis on spreading his budget across as many nights as possible  3 to 4 months if I recall.

Yep I remember when I worked. I had to survive on 12 weeks holiday.

Re the two Kendal sites -

CCC site is north of Kendal on A6.

CAMC site is south of Kendal a couple of miles from M6 J36.

Either of the Kendal sites would suit you, Kjell. Should you choose the C&CC one, when coming from the north, it's best access by turning off the M6 at Junction 39 Shap and then using the A6 over Shap Summit, instead of having to drive through Kendal. You can also walk into town from that site, which you can't really do from the CC's site.

Thanks Nellie.  We have used the CAMC site, once, many years back, and found it rather shady for our liking, so are leaning more to the CCC one if we do decide to stop in the Lakes for a few days.  Also works out less expensive for us as not CCC peak season, plus we get the over 60s discount.

A CL or CS would do too if they had a hardstanding.   Somewhere east of Windermere, but not too close to the M6 or any noisy road.

We will be travelling from CAMC Garlieston to a CL in Wales, not far beyond Chester, to visit friends. Not undoable in one,  but further than we ideally would do in one hop, plus we do like to try to fit in a few days in the Lakes every so often.  Also considering sites a little further south, but north of Lancaster.

Have you been to Garlieston before K? Excellent site with two pitching areas, see the site plan. The left hand side is sheltered and little views while the right hand side has views over the sea, and you can pitch (without awning) right by the sea wall. Beach is on your doorstep (where the Mulberry harbour was tested). Good food at the local pub.

No Freddy, I was a highway design engineer. I was fortunate enough to be able to schedule my workload from the age of 36 until I retired at 55. Often producing designs, contract drawings and documents etc to tight timescales. That meant that I often worked long days. I refused to put those long hours in for overtime payment and said 'if you want me to do it I won't accept time and a half - will accept simple time in lieu or find somebody else'.

During my last year at work I used up the many hours still owed and the longest that I worked for 9 months from April in any month was 7 days and some of that from home. During the last 3 months until the next April 1st I worked 1.5 days mainly sorting my desk and files etc.

No, we have tried to get there twice before, but had to cancel due to illness or family stuff, so hoping it will be third time lucky!  We have visited the area before, using a commercial site,  but it was many years back, 1998 I think.

We will be arriving on a Friday, so choice of pitches may be limited, but hope to get one with a view.  Have noted the tip about the pub, thanks!

    Hi,

Would recommend Scotgate in Keswick now run by ccc, and skelwith fold in ambleside both have bus stop out side and nearby pubs.

Looked into CCC Keswick but couldn't stop for 1 night.

I presume you've visited Meathop Fell KJ as that would be another alternative in the south lakes.

Meathop Fell is a very nice site for visiting Grange, Flookburgh etc but IMO too far away for visiting any of the actual Lakes.

Yes, at least twice, it is a site we like, but at the time we would be there, late June,  it would be £25.20  per night.

CCC Kendal would be £60.05 for 3 nights.

CAMC Kendal would be £29.90 per night.   surprised

Off to search for some CLs.

How about Beckthwaite, bang in the middle of Coniston village. Easy stroll down to the lake, buses in all directions and great variety of eateries! smile

Retired at 55, nice. Sounds like you’ve plotted your path successfully. I had hoped to retire at 60, but things conspired against that. I turn 64 next month, and retire in May, just in time for the summer (touring) season, yippee! 🙂

Sounds nice, but looking to be not too far off the motorway as we will be continuing south after 2-3 days.

Also, we have stayed at CAMC Coniston and I did not like the road over to there with our TA van!

I have not found much in the way of CLs with EHU and hardstanding in the Kendal area, so I think we will book CCC Kendal

We have stayed at C&CC Kendal a few times. It's a typical, nice C&CC site, good for walking directly from site and an easy drive into Ambleside/Windermere though it's sometimes difficult to find parking space there! I seem to recall the site has its own bar/bistro but have never used it. There is a very good pub at Crook but you'd have to drive to it - can recommend the game casserole! smile

    Sorry M but there’s no bar/bistro at C&CC Kendal. You’ll be thinking of another site I expect.🙂

Ah, may well have closed since the last time we were there then. It'll have to be the pub at Crook after all (no hardship!) wink

Edit - it's  The Sun Inn! smile

Ah yes, too right - that was indeed the one we've stayed at Staveley, not Kendal.

Must concentrate on this and not the Brexit votest!  laughing

Kjell, have you thought of stopping a bit further north, around Penrith. Quite a few CLs just off the M6. It will mean about 3 hours to the Chester area for your onward drive.

    A couple of thoughts, Kjell.

The C&CC's Windermere site at Stavely is nice and quiet, and is easily accessed, East of the town of Windermere, but a little bit away from the M6.

There's a quiet CL which we've used , Mosergh Farm, Selside, off the A6 between Shap & Kendal, which has H/S but it is up a rather narrow single track lane which deadends at the farm.

Thanks Nellie, I have looked at both of those and saw the narrow lane to the CL so decided to rule it out.  The CCC Windermere is a possibility.

Would there be much road noise at their Kendal site?

I don’t recall any traffic noise at all, Kj. The site is set back off the road.

I have, yes, but OH, who usually decides what we are doing  innocent   says  she would prefer to be closer to Windermere.

It is a bit of a balancing act between not straying too far off the route for just a few days, and being closer to the places we will likely visit.

Lots of fairly narrow roads in places, and we have a large van, so compromise is necessary

As I said, it was several years ago we last visited but I can’t think the situation will have changed. I seem to recall the entrance lane sloped downhill and the site itself slopes down to the fields on the eastern boundary so is sheltered from the A6. I think most of the pitches were level though.
