Ttda, if you're a member of 't other club, then their Delamere Forest site is a good alternative to Chester (we've been to the Chester site once and really didn't like it, we like walking and cycling, and we didn't find the site very good for that).
We stayed at Delamere last week for 4 nights, and the station is literally nextdoor, so very easy to get to. They do a "Duo" ticket to Chester, which means 1 return at full price and the 2nd at half price. Cost us £10.50 last week to go to Chester, and a very enjoyable day it was, if rather cold!
And of course the forest is also nextdoor, with miles and miles of foot and cycle paths.

Try Belle Vue Fm CL, No. 75 in Site Directory. You can cycle into Chester along the old railway track from near the site. Not that far from the Zoo either.

I am so sorry you had to change your plans takethedogalong and sincere apologies to everyone affected.
Any regular visitors to York will be aware of the propensity for the River Ouse to burst its banks during heavy rainfall so these works are welcome, it is just regrettable that the Club was not made aware of the plans sooner and for this we offer our sincere apologies.

Thank you Rowenna for that link. It contains very interesting information on the plan that is now being implemented.
It can be summarised as creating a continuous barrier to protect the nearby housing by a mixture of raising existing defences and flood proofing buildings. As part of this barrier, a "demountable defence" is to be placed across the street Clementhorp, which is the sole usable access to Terry Avenue and the site. Terry Avenue and the Caravan Club Site are on the river side of the barrier and are not being protected.
I do hope The Club has better liasion with whatever authority closes this barrier than thay have had about the present works (which may well be the installation of the barrier). Once it is activated when there is a threat of flooding, any caravans and vehicles on site will be trapped in the flood area.

We are still undecided at the moment, we are adopting our usual “what is the weather doing where” strategy again. Got some nice options to go at, including cottages if the weather turns snowy, which is only thing that will prevent us using MH. But grateful for all the tips, especially the CL ones, I think a week touring might be our preference to a single site stop.😁
As for York........booked or not, we always look at rainfall there, it’s all about the rivers, and it still floods despite all the work carried out.

Looking at the plans on the link it seems as though the caravan site and hotel next door have been sacrificed to the power of the flood waters by building the defences at the western edge of the site. Surely the club must have been involved in consultations over this. It seems to have been in planning since 2016 and public consultation from 2017.
The drawing of the new defences is not to clear. It doesn't explain what the brown line or hatched area denotes and why is the grey line described as being built by others. Surely one contractor would be appointed to do the job.
So what plans are there to evacuate the site before the river defences across Clemthorpe Drive and Vine Street are activated? It all must hinge on information from The Environment Agency.
Considering the size of the project and heavy plant needed in the immediate vicinity during construction I can see Rowntree Park site being a no go area in the foreseeable future. Interestingly there is no date given for commencement of the work.

Harry, I read the brown hatching as being the footprint of the area to be occupied to carry out the works. The grey line "built by others" I think is part of the construction of the hotel, which is probably being built to be above flood level.

Dear All,
It is unfortunate that site will be closed for a week beginning 4th March.
However being a member of the club who lives very close to Rowntree Park I can tell you that this work is very much needed. It is about one of the last large residential areas in York that does not have proper flood protection in place. If it is completed it will save about 200 homes from being flooded.
The caravan site (along with the new hotel, which was opposed by most of the local residence) will be on the flood side of the defensive. They are both very much on the flood plain section. The access road to the site, hotel and park will still flood even if the work goes ahead. However the club site has been emptied of outfits without problem on infrequent occasions in the past when flood conditions are forecasted - a mountable barrier is already used at the corner of Clenthorpe / Terry Avenue. The gate at the back site is purely an emergency exit.
I understand that the site is owned by the City of York Council and leased to the club. (My wife stopped there with her parents when it was a grass field). On a separate issue will you note that Clementhope and Terry Avenue have a 20 mile an hour speed limit and please do not arrive before noon and park up blocking Clementhorpe and Terry Avenue.

Hope the proposed works help with the flooding yardbird. My Dad was from York, we know the City very well, such work is long overdue to protect the city, it’s residents and the wonderful history!👍
