Was Agatha Christie ever quite so gruesome as this three night adaption of her story? I've been watching it because I can't remember the ending but I think just one night of condensed drama would have been enough. Anyone else think the same? wink

I think the way it has been produced does justify the series. We are so used to seeing Hercule Poirot portrayed as a slightly comical character. This is a more gritty portrayal. Mind you I wasn't so sure after the first episode but I thought it got a bit more interesting last night. I will wait and see how we end up after the final episode.

PS I am pretty sure the place they identify as Andover is not Andover, it looks a bit like Hebden Bridge!!! Can anyone help me with that?

I've got friends in Andover, I didn't recognise it either, especially the surrounding hills. wink

My father lived in Andover. It's not Andover. Leaving aside the geography, the pace suggests to me that it could easily be done in two one hour episodes rather than dragging it out for effect.

we think it is Saltaire village just outside Bradford also Bexhill rail station is very much like the entrance to the SPA hotel in Ripon

Ah, the internet is a wonderful thing, just looked up the locations and it's very much a Yorkshire based production. I expect Agatha Christie knew the original places, especially Churston so it's a big diversion from the original.

Some of the railway scenes are filmed at Pickering station - I think it supposed to be Doncaster 🤔

I must say that,in the end, I rather liked the series. A different way of portraying the story. There would have been no point in just making a copy of the David Suchet, or even Peter Ustinov style of Poirot. it had to be different otherwise they may have just just as well shown the previous series. I will try and get my free copy of the Guardian when in Waitrose tomorrow to see if they have further comment.

Have to say I enjoyed it a lot. Thought John Malkovich put a nice spin on his portrayal of Poirot . Never saw that ending coming..

Its not a newspaper I usually allow in the housewink Looking online I can't find that quote but  from what you are allowed to see online without signing in but both Jake Kerridge and Gerard O'Donovan, on consecutive days seem to quite like the adaptation making the same point I made up post about it being more serious.

At least it was something interesting in what was a pretty poor selection of television over Christmas!

Quite agree David, nice to see something a bit different instead of the usual trawl out of repeats I've come to expect from the TV companies over Christmas.

Typical of today’s TV. Writers have to jump through a lot more hoops than Christie ever had to, hence you get a lot of character changes, different murderers, different motives. Not saying it doesn’t make for interesting TV, but it’s taking someone else’s lovingly built up creation and imposing different ideals and beliefs onto them. It’s why Hollywood just churns out the same old guff and remakes. Very rare a new character or characters emerge, but when they do it usually makes for good watching. I am sure some authors must be spinning in their graves at what is done to their characters at times. Scandi-noir is very ‘in’ at the moment, hence even Poirot gets a makeover.

Bit slow for me, fortunately I have saved it so can wizz through the many boring bits.  Think this version has succumbed to a dose of poetic license 🥴☠️

Just caught up with ABC murders .... Ignore my ignorance, did Agatha write Hercule's past as a priest?

Some exerts from the ABC Murders was filmed at Bradford City Hall. Visitors can see the cells used for filming in the Bradford Police Museum (see www.bradfordpolicemuseum.com) which re-opens on the 15th March, then every Friday & Saturday until November (admission charges apply - its run by a charity)

The cells have also been used for filming Peaky Blinders.
