Wales Tour
Looking at doing a North/Mid Wales tour, Barmouth/Dolgellau probably furthest South we want to do, but any recommendations under £20 per night gratefully received. All types of site, beach, farm or rural preferred. Must have a decent late/early walkies for dogs. We will be touring so not bothered about transport links. Prefer small quiet sites, but don’t mind if CL has an adjacent addition. We are self contained, but at right price will welcome site with clean showers. Haven’t decided on our route in or out yet, so open to suggestions. We love history, churches, unusual museums and ice cream! (A visit to Cadwallders is on the list!) We are located South Yorkshire, and not bothered about motorway routes. Sites must be open early March.

Pant Gwyn Farm at Tudweiliog on the Llyn peninsular is in a fantastic spot. He seems to have his CL as well as a separate caravan site plus another field for tents but don't let that put you off, there's always been plenty of room when we've been. There's a simple but clean shower/toilet block. Perfect for dog walks along the coast.
But don't let everyone know about it 😉

We are going to stay at Pencraig CL in April, it’s just outside Welshpool, basically it’s fairly central to where we want to be. Will mean a little driving to places like Barmouth but that’s ok as we will stop off at the Max Loop. The CL is £15/night

Great, thanks for all ideas, I will take a look later today. That looks nice DK, we don’t mind paying a bit more some stays if we can get a cheap stay somewhere else. Could be a good one for dogs as good access to beach and flat promenade to roll his chariot down! Looking to average around £20 and under a night.

Portmeirion is lovely, even better if staying st the hotel. I think the Mawddach and Dovey estuaries are good. Spoilt for choice really but DKs suggested Badmouth site would be easy at this time of the year. I also seem to recall a CL on the cycle route on the southern side of the estuary near Barmouth?

Are dogs still banned from Portmeirion? It’s the reason we didn’t visit when we were in the area a few years ago.

Stayed on a CL a couple of years ago which next to the Dolgellau/Barmouth cycle track running along the estuary. Sorry I don't remeber the name of it and looking in the handbook didn't trigger my memory. However if you can find it would be meeting your needs.

Ttda, we stayed at a nice CL near Dolgellau called Ty Cerrig , it is now £18 pn, think we paid £14, but there is a loo and shower at the farm if required.Lovely walks straight from the CL, the owner Mafanwy will point you in the right direction.
It was quiet apart from the jets flying up the valley.

It’s not on our “to do list” to be honest. Likely to be too busy for us. Very pretty though. Thinking of going clockwise, possible first night at Ellesmere, up to Llangollen, then down towards Dolgellau/Barmouth area. Up Coast after that. It’s the castles that draw us, a while since we have been.

Have you thought of going onto Anglesey? Lots of CLs on there as well as 2 CC sites...Caer Mawr is a favourite of ours, non-facilities and within your £20 price range.

If you are starting at Ellesmere then Rosedale CP fits your bill. About £12/13 pn with a dog walk adjacent, hardstanding if needed and decent Shower and WC. Not far from Ellesmere.

Thanks WTG, we have done all the castles up there, but hoping to revisit. We like the proper Welsh ones as well as the “English” ones!
Might get over to Anglesey thanks Nellie. We are probably only having a week away, and it all depends on weather, we shall go elsewhere if it looks wet or snowy. We don’t know the Dolgellau area very well at all, but I had family in North Wales, so we do know Gwynedd/Snowdonia/Clwydd quite well, and my sister worked in Harlech for a while. We went across to see her and took our camper van onto Black Rock Sands for a BBQ one night.
Not much running on railways early March, but I do fancy having a look at Beddgelert Site, we have had some lovely stays there in the past. Some cracking sites folks have suggested, sure we can put a nice tour together from some of these. My Dad’s brother is buried somewhere at Blaenau Ffestiniog, and I might see if I can find his grave this time.

Yes, looks very nice. It can be quite a trek across from home, so might be a good first night stop. We can decide which way to go from there as well.
Off thread, but if you get across to Saltburn while at WWP, can highly recommend either the Fish and Chip shop on seafront, or a meal in The Ship Inn overlooking the beach. It was very nice last time we were there!😃

If you are off to Dolgellau/Barmouth have you checked out this site?
We were thinking of staying here when next in the area. Never stayed before so can't recommend or comment but the reviews on UKcampsite seem OK and seem to tick your boxes.
