Green questions to ask when buying
It's the latest MH and Caravan show again soon.
We'll not be buying there, but there'll be lots of vehicles and gear on show, full of every conceivable gadget and new material.
Now that most people finally accept the need to improve our treatment of the environment, I wonder if potential customers would consider asking the sales teams what they're doing to make their vehicles less environmentally unfriendly - emissions, materials used, recyclability of parts, and anything else relevant.
Vehicle makers are at last staggering in the direction of working on such developments, but it's only because enough noise is being made at them. The more customers who ask for these improvements in their new vehicles, the more they'll work at it, hopefully.
I'm aware that costs drive production methods more than anything, but change is happening, and if you think it's needed, this might be a good opportunity to help it.
Thanks for reading.

I’m not sure a salesman is the best person to give an accurate answer.🤔

I'll not be going to the show - and did not go to the Scottish one last week even though it was 10 miles away. The non-green footprint of the caravan I have is already defined, so the best way to minimise that effect on the world is to keep it in use as long as possible. So my bit is being done, not for the sake of the environment I might say, but because we like it and have no intention of changing.
I suggest anyone concerned about the impact of their potential new caravan should instead keep the one they already have going longer.

or just sit in their garden embracing a tree and drinking purified water until it is time to have a "green funeral".

I find the whole concept of 'green' in relation to LVs and our hobby rather laughable. It’s a contradiction in terms.
The only way to be truly green in this respect is to give up and stay at home. To do otherwise while promoting the green message is somewhat hypocritical, in my opinion.

Our 35 year old caravan is very green. It has two wheels, a good bed, a grand little 2 hob and grill. A good deal of it could be recycled. It isn’t made out of a lot of plastic. 😁
Greenest thing we do is never go to Shows.

I don't think I would be that interested to be honest. Not trying to avoid the question by by the time you get to a built motorhome or caravan the damage has already been done. I think if you were that concerned you might not buy in the first place. I think our hobby is pretty "Green" anyway because I expect we all use less electricity, less gas and less water when we are away in our units.

Fully agree,
Now that most people finally accept the need to improve our treatment of the environment..
If the OP really really really believed this he/she would sell his/her outfit and get a tent and bike as suggested and also not produce hot air as also suggested?
No I won't be asking such questions on any purchase caravan or otherwise.

I find that truckwash (tfr) does a very good job of getting rid of green

Agree thoroughly, that's one admirable van Wouldn't it be nice if they made more caravans that way these days?!

Thanks for the various replies. I agree with quite a number of them too
And I'm not repenting having posted - I wasn't expecting much different, tbh!
Given that we do live in the the society we do, and as such, are dependent on much of its infrastructure, I don't see any problem with highlighting possibilities for encouraging the makers of things to move in the right direction, so at least to reduce the further damage.
For ourselves, having done tents into our 60's, we'll go on using our nearly 20 yr old caravan as long as possible, and like some here, not be going to sales shows. There will be plenty of people buying new, however, and if some of them read this and as a result give the sales teams a harder time about what they're being sold, which hopefully gets fed back to the production teams, that'll be a result.

Sorry sweet man bit lost on your post😀
Its a grand little van HH. In need of some TLC at moment to get it back to how we want it, but perfectly usable. Hopefully once we get Winter out of way we will fetch her home and do the work required. Proper little classic now, luckily dry, well insulated just needs tarting up inside and out. We love touring again so MH getting used more, but I can feel a month in Cornwall calling...........😁

so in essence, not only are you not giving up touring and stay at home to help with being green, you're actually asking other to do your green work for you? Still if that assuages your conscience who am I to judge?
Also if you take into account the members of CT v the actual number of club members then factor in the actual number of those who will attend shows you probably aren't doing enough IMHO.

Sorry, HH, but you can’t have your cake and eat it. You want to run a tow car and drag a white box around the country purely for pleasure yet promote all things green. It beggars belief, tbh.
Lead by example and then you might be justified in trying to discourage others from taking up the hobby.

it was a "sarcastic" answer to green.Sorry if it did not work for you,it means that one,s once white or cream caravan has become green over the winter and needs a clean!....hence my reference to truckwash!...once again my apoligies for not making it clear that it was a joke.

Must admit I read it like that too...
as someone far wiser said, all for the want of a comma

Mr C's not alone.😀

because you know I can write English so people understand what I am saying David?
Q) What's the difference between a cat and a comma?
A) One has its claws at the end of its paws, and one is a pause at the end of a clause.

No offence taken, I just didn’t understand it, but can see now. It gets a wash every so often, so not actually green. We intend painting the outside two tone, done one before like this and it worked a treat. Blinking holidays keep getting in way of resto project!😂

Hate for you to say Let's eat Grandma when you meant let's eat, grandma
