Hi All

We’re doing the Great North Run from Newcastle, finishing on the coast at South Shields in September this year.

We’re looking for help for somewhere to pitch our motorhome. There are very few caravan sites in the area, are there any unofficial spots where we could wild camp for a night or two? We don’t need hook-up. We’ve read that the parks by the beach are opened for camping – any ideas how these can be booked?

Any recommendations, suggestions or experience of where to pitch a motorhome in South Shields would be very much appreciated. As would any areas or sites to avoid.

We’re doing the Great North Run from Newcastle, finishing on the coast at South Shields in September this year.

Hope you can help us

Ed & Di

There was a site here in 2018, I know no more but, if interested, try contacting

What are your plans to get from your motorhome  to  the start and from the finish of the race? There should be designated parking for competitors near the race start in Newcastle with transport provided. I know that there are buses and Metro train express services from the race finish back to Newcastle. If you use your motorhome to get to and from the race there is the cmcc site at Old Hartley and a cl just outside of Gateshead just off the A1 no.1565 in the 2019/2018 directory. There is also a commercial site at Rowlands Gill just outside Gateshead - Derwent Park. There is also the cmcc at Durham about fifteen miles down the A1.

    Hope this helps

You are probably sorted now , and my post maybe of little use , but i did the great north run a few years back , and it took longer to get away from the finish line than it did to run the whole race . Its bedlham as you can imagine , with 56000 people and their families all trying to catch the buses etc away from south shields front . I’m not familiar with if there is any free camping along that front but there are lots of parking spaces , but unless you blagged your space at least two days early and were allowed to stay for that time , you wouldn’t get anywhere near there on the day as all the official pick up coaches park there and it gets chocca block. Enjoy the race anyway . Theres no room there for a pb time , but being part of the crowd is certainly a heart warming experience. Take some loo roll for the beginning...they run out !

Not done the GNR for a few years but there used to be a camping/caravan site down the road from the finish. Not sure if it was free or subsidised but it was a temporary site.

We used to stay in chalets next to the Ginger Giraffe pub then catch the free buses up to Newcastle.

If they still provide all this, then the best place to look would be on the GNR website.
