I have Just been reading an E.mail from a friend in Devon about some of the latest "safety cameras" that have been installed  on the A38 at Halden Hill and Gdynia Way nr Plymouth

They are fitted with the latest  sophisticated cameras that not only detect  speeding but can also pick up the use of drivers useing mobile phones plus other driving defects

If  the trial is successful they are going to be rolled out nation widesurprised

We seemed to reach a stage a few years ago when speeding was on the decrease but of late with the loss of interest by the authorities it seems to have slipped back. Provided its used in accident blackspots, outside schools etc and not as a cash cow I`m all in favour of camera`s.

The reason i posted this thread is I was at a meeting at our county police HQ last year and they "advised" us that the next generation of cameras were about to be introduced in an area of England, with cameras it seems with the Email i recd that also could read through "dirty ?" number plates as well as motor cycles with just the rear plate

and i agree that anything that may help to "educate" those who need it is welcome by others

but, limits aside, how fast is too fast? I have a Smart 451 & 70mph when it's windy is really fast enough, whereas 70mph in my R Class is just getting going

We need a speed camera about every 100m on every road, although it could be cheaper to install a monitor in every vehicle.

I saw thi8s i8n the paper  As twocals says though, the only people who have anything to fear are those that are breaking the law.

My only objection is that it is a lazy way to police drivers.

All for it, especially if it catches those using mobiles. There have been some very nasty deaths due to phone usage by HGV drivers, amongst others, this last couple of years.

Haldon Hill, we pedalled our MG towing small caravan up there one year, luckily the replacement clutch was cheap!🤣🤣

Haldon Hill is notorious in bad weather, people get stuck going up it and others drive too fast going down, hope the cameras improve the safety of everyone all year round.

With the lack of traffic police that is said to be because of financial restraints on police forces they are by far the most effective method now available,

When at the meeting i mentioned in an earlier post it was said that Safety Cameras and ANPR technology  now means that a vehicle on the "hot" list can be followed and stopped over large parts of the road network saving hours of having vehicles "observing" traffic by being parked up, ,releasing them for other work until the hot vehicle is "flagged up",which with the latest type now "on test" with far more possible uses than the older types .

And as said ,you are not affected if you are being sensible

Either way the cameras do not prevent speeding or the use of a mobile phone so are just a money grabbing scheme.  What we need is more traffic officers on the road patrolling to prevent speeding and illegal use of mobile phone!  A police car is a far better deterrent than any camera as many occasions people do not see the camera and continue to break the law.

I can remember many years ago and not in this country a motorist was caught several times on the same stretch of road speeding.  When it went to court his argument was that by not stopping him and fining him on the stop, they were condoning the speeding.  He got off scot free however I think they then changed the law in that country.

It seems to make perfect sense to use technology to catch people who are breaking the law in this manner. I am equally perplexed why anyone would use a hand held mobile phone whilst driving, has no one heard of hands free solutions?  I would rather see increase police numbers used for far more serious matters where perhaps the use of technology is far less likely to aid them in their work.
